Abstract

Apparatus for the treatment of ovine conditions comprises: a housing 18 of dimensions to permit sheep to stand fully within same, one side 16 of the housing being open to permit access of sheep; feed trough 22 for attractant feed 23 in the housing for attracting sheep into the housing, and means 12 on the floor of the housing for self administration of fungicide and/or bactericide chemical treatment; wherein the positioning of the trough is such that the sheep are constrained to stand entirely within the housing and on the chemically treated floor surface thereof. Also disclosed (but not illustrated) is an animal activated spray used within the housing. A back rubbing post is shown at 25 and 33 in Figs. 1 and 3 respectively also for self-administration of chemical treatment. <IMAGE>

Description

Apparatus for the treatment including feeding of sheep and calves The present invention relates to apparatus for the treatment including feeding of sheep and calves and is more particularly concerned with apparatus for treating sheep suffering from foot infections and body skin complaints.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus for the treatment of ovine conditions comprising a housing of dimensions to permit a sheep or sheep to stand fully within same and on the floor thereof with one side of the housing being completely open to permit access of sheep thereinto, means for placing an attractant lure by or within the housing for attracting sheep to enter the housing, means for providing on the surface of the housing floor or comprising the same thereof fungicide and/or bactericide chemical treatment means wherein the positioning of the attractant lure is such that the sheep is/are constrained to stand entirely within the housing and on the chemically treated floor surface thereof.
The attractant lure will be positioned by or within the housing near to the side of the housing opposite to that through which sheep enter the housing.
Conveniently said side of the housing may have an opening to allow introduction of the attractant lure into the housing for presentation to the sheep in, for example, a trough located on the inner surface of the side of the housing.
The distance, within the housing, from the leading edge of such a trough to the open edge of the floor over which sheep step to enter the housing is of importance. It must not be less than a certain threshold dimension otherwise sheep would be able to reach the attractant lure with only their front feet standing on the chemically treated floor surface. The attractant lure may be a food substance, a mineral salt composition or a pheromone or pheromone based composition and as such at least will attract sheep by the smell thereof.
Thus the distance from trough edge to floor edge also must not be too great otherwise the smell of the attractant lure will not be sufficient to induce the sheep to overcome their natural fear of entering a confined space of their own free will.
Similarly the height of the open side of the housing is significant in relation to the distance between the trough edge and floor edge in that if the open side is too high cows would be able to reach into the housing without stepping onto the floor thereof and take the lure. Thus for common sheep breeds for example Devon long Wool, Suffolk, Dorset and .Mules the distance between trough leading edge and open floor edge should preferably be not less than a distance in the range of 38 inches to 45 inches. Said distance should not, for the above reasons, be greater than a distance in the range of 45 inches to 52 inches. Also the height of the open side of the housing through which sheep access to the inside of the housing should not be greater than 36 inches.
To ensure sheep will readily enter the housing to take feed stuff or mineral composition and, while doing so, stand with all feet on the chemically treated flooring, it may be desirable to provide for the trough which contains the feed/minerals/lure to be adjustably mounted such that the critical minimum threshold distance between trough edge and open floor edge can be varied dependent upon sheep breed size, strength of feed/mineral odour or upon presence/absence of cows or calves in the same field in which the housing is located.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided apparatus for the treatment of ovine conditions comprising a housing of dimensions to permit a sheep or sheep to stand fully within same and on the floor thereof with one side of the housing being completely open to permit access of sheep thereinto, means for placing an attractant lure by or within the housing, means on or under the floor surface of the housing in a region adjacent the location of the attractant lure and of extent such that said region is only contactable by the front feet of the sheep whilst taking the attractant lure, means positioned above the areas occupyable by the sheep whilst taking said lure to provide a chemical treatment in spray, jet or droplet form to be directable onto the backs of said sheep and means responsive to the pressure of the front feet of said sheep on said region of the floor surface to activate the flow of said chemical treatment.
The chemical substances used for impregnating the flooring of the housing may include a surfactant chemical to help to reduce the surface tension on the hooves of the sheep to facilitate more complete application of the chemicals to the hooves. Similarly the chemical substances used in the overhead spray may also with advantage include surfactant chemicals or other chemicals to assist the liquid spray to penetrate the wool layer of the sheep and present a more complete dosage of the treatment chemicals onto the skin of the animal.
The open wall of the housing may be provided with bars positioned detachably vertically between the upper and lower edge of the opening to form a grid and spaced apart a distance sufficient either to allow entrance to a single lamb or a sheep as the case may be.
The bars may also be adapted to be assemblable into a frame for attachment to the exterior surface of a side wall of the housing. The frame would be attached to the housing wall in a manner such as to present an inclined extended under surface thereof which under surface may comprise or have attached thereto a downwardly facing absorbent surface which can be impregnated with disinfectant chemicals. This arrangement provides a means whereby sheep can walk under the downwardly sloping frame extension and rub their backs against the frame thereby assisting in the transfer and application of treatment chemicals to their skin.
Reinforcing bars for strengthening the side walls of the housing are conventionally, and for the sake of appearance, secured to the interior surface of the side walls. In the apparatus of the invention the reinforcing bar or bars may be secured to the exterior surface of the side wall which may then conveniently provide means upon which the said extension frame may be detachably mounted.
The bars which comprise both the housing entrance grid and the side extension frame may when fully disassembled be stacked in bracket extension means mounted on the upper edge of the wall of the housing opposite the entrance wall.
Specific embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 shows a sectional view taken on the line ii - 11 of Figure 1; and Figure 3 shows a perspective view of another embodiment of the invention.
In Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a housing 10 having as its base a generally rectangular shallow tray-like container 11 housing a porous layer 12 on the upwardly directed surface thereof. The tray 11 is surrounded by upstanding side walls 13, 14 a rear wall 15 and a front wall 16 in which there is an aperture 17. Over side walls 13 and 14 and rear wall 15 and front wall 16 is a roof or cover 18 inclined downwardly from the rear.
The housing 10 is mounted on legs 19 which may be adjustable.
Rear wall 15 has an opening 20 with a closable flap 21 and an inwardly projecting tray 22 on which an attractant lure such as a food substance or a mineral composition may be placed as illustrated in Figure 2 by reference numeral 23.
On side wall 13 is mounted an inclined projection 24 having porous layer 25 on its downwardly facing surface for impregnation with disinfectant or other chemical substances. The position and inclination of projection 24 is such as to encourage animals to rub their backs on under surface layer 25 thereby transferring chemicals to help combat parasitic infection.
Figure 3 shows a further embodiment of housing 10 in which on end wall 13 there are located reinforcing bars 30 and 31. Detachably attached to these bars 30 and 31 are the housing entrance grid bars 32 assembled to form a projection frame the under surface of which bars 32 may include a porous surface for disinfectant/chemical impregnation. A diagonal anti-distortion bar (not shown) may detachably connect the two upwardly inclined bars 32 and 33 or may detachably connect bars 34 to prevent the frame twisting during aggressive back-rubbing by animals against the underside of the frame.
