Abstract

A ventilation valve (1) made of plastics material for ventilating a crankcase of a combustion engine has a casing (2), an inlet (3) leading to the crankcase and an outlet (4). Within the casing (2) pipe (10) with an integral valve seating (6) is located with a tight tolerance as a plug-in unit (5). The pipe (10) extends from the outlet (4) to the valve seating (6) and is joined to the outlet (4) in the vicinity of the casing wall. The plug-in unit (5) slidably fits into the casing (2) in one position with a tight tolerance to minimise leaks. A membrane (9) acting as a seal engages on the seating (6) and is held by a lid (8) on the casing (2) with an opening to subject the membrane to atmospheric pressure. A tubular insert (12) may be introduced into the outlet (4) to form a good seal between the outlet (4) and the pipe (10). <IMAGE>

Description

VENTILATION VALVE The present invention relates to a ventilation valve, in particular to a valve of the type used to ventilate crank cases of combustion engines.
Valves of this kind are known in many different forms either made as a separate entity or integral with one or more separating devices used in the separation of oil mist from air.
Thus, for example a combined oil mist and ventilation valve is described in DE 37 01 587. In this device, the separator adopts a two-stage separation process, the first stage comprising the use of a synthetic fleece or metal knitmaterial and the second stage a cyclone.
Within the field of such devices, these ventilation valves or oil mist separators using such ventilation valves, which are otherwise constructed differently, generally have a membrane and a valve seat to regulate the outlet.
The fitting of the valve seat and the connection of the outlet makes the final component particularly expensive and complicated to manufacture.
In DE 39 38 919 a combined crankcase oil separator and ventilation valve made of sheet metal is described. This device has a partition in the outlet in the region of the wall of the casing. The installation of the outlet pipe and valve seat is conducted by inserting the outlet pipe diagonally into the casing and thus pushing it through the outlet opening so that it projects slightly from the casing.
Finally a connection is inserted into the outlet pipe from the outside. The connection, outlet pipe and casing are then soldered together. This process is expensive and elaborate.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved ventilation valve that enables the production and assembly costs to be minimised.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a ventilation valve for the crankcase of a combustion engine; said valve having a casing, an inlet means and an outlet means whereby the outlet means is connected in the region of the casing wall to a pipe means extending inside the casing with a valve seat located therein and the valve seat can be closed by a membrane subjected to atmospheric pressure, characterised in that the ventilation valve is made of plastics material the pipe means is an integral plug-in unit which is held inside the casing by a sliding fit through which a connection to the outlet means protruding from the casing is facilitated.
Economical manufacture and assembly is made possible by making the ventilation valve out of plastic and by constructing the outlet pipe with valve seat as a plug-in unit.
Compared with known designs which have a three-part casing the construction of the invention has the advantage that an outer axial separation joint between the air outlet connection and the casing which previously had to be welded or soldered, becomes unnecessary. It is replaced by an inner radial separation joint with a narrow fit, that requires no welding. A further advantage of the plug-in unit is that it can be used without modification in several different casings with e.g., having different external cross-sections.
Further preferred features of the invention are defined in the dependent claims.
The invention is explained in more detail in the following on the basis of one embodiment.
The accompanying drawing, Figure 1, is a cross sectional view of a ventilation valve made in accordance with the invention.
As shown, a ventilation valve 1 has a casing 2 having an inlet means 3 to admit air from a crankcase and an air outlet means 4 providing a connector for a tube (not shown) enabling the purified air to flow to the induction tract of the combustion engine.
Within the casing 2 there is a plug-in unit 5 having an air outlet pipe means 10 leading to the outlet means 4. The pipe means 10 is equipped with a valve seat 6 concentric to the casing 2 and an integrated spring 7. The axial fixing of the plug-in unit 5 can be achieved with a clip-connection. During assembly the plug-in unit 5 is inserted axially into the casing 2 and to seal the air outlet pipe means 10 from the casing 2, a relatively narrow sliding fit is used In addition, the plug-in unit 5 has a guide, not illustrated here, - e.g., a groove-spring in the casing 2 which permits the plug-in unit 5 to be inserted into the casing 2 in only one configuration so as to align the air outlet pipe means 10 with the outlet means 4.
The joint between the air outlet pipe means 10 and the air outlet means 4 can, if necessary, be sealed by a small tube 12 inserted into the air outlet means 4 which bridges the separation joint and projects into the air outlet pipe means 10 by several millimetres.
A membrane 9 is mounted in the casing 2 with the aid of a cover or lid 8 open to the atmosphere. Depending on the pressure conditions in the crankcase the membrane 9 can be lifted away from the valve seat 6 or the spring 7 can lift the membrane 9 from the valve seat 6 to permit the air to flow to the outlet means 4.
A separation medium 11 is accommodated within a cavity beneath the plug-in part 5 so that the lower region of the valve 1 functions as an oil mist separator.
