Valves.-In a two-stroke engine, inlet ports 9<1> and exhaust ports 10<1> are controlled by a reciprocating sleeve valve 8. The inlet ports 9<1> may be placed in the lower part of the cylinder. The mixture may be supplied by a rotary compressor 13, and the timing of the valve is such that the inlet ports are closed when the cylinder pressure equals the maximum pressure which can be produced by the compressor. The sleeve valve may be actuated by an eccentric on the crank shaft as shown, or on a parallel shaft; or the several sleeve valves of a multicylinder engine may be actuated by a series of shafts perpendicular to the crank shaft. Also the sleeves may have a helicoidal motion.
