Abstract
The mechanical steering wheel immobiliser to be used on unattended motor vehicles, comprising a one piece cover moulded as a unit or made up of individual front 1, side 5 and back 6 plates. The cover fits over the steering wheel and prevents mechanical attack or removal. This is held in place by means of a U or L shaped retaining bolt which passes around the steering wheel and through the cover via one or more holes 2 and is itself locked in place by means of a locking mechanism. <IMAGE>
Description
STEERING WHEEL SECURITY COVER.
This invention refers to a security cover that fits over the steering wheel of an unattended motor vehicle.
One form of mechanical vehicle immobilisation is to prevent the use of the steering wheel by attaching a security device that prevents free rotation of that component.This method of immobilisation has a weakness in that the steering wheel itself can be cut or removed and another substituted.
According to the present invention there is a one piece security cover that covers the steering wheel of a motor vehicle.This is held in place on the steering wheel of the vehicle by flanges on the rear of the device,and a U shaped retaining bolt that passes around the rim of the steering wheel or a radial arm of the steering wheel and through holes in the front cover of the device.This bolt can be held in place either by using a separate locking mechanism such as a padlock or an integral lock attached to the cover.The length of the cover is such that when fitted it prevents normal use of the drivers seat steering wheel and other controls.
The design of the device will now be explained with reference to the accompanying diagrams:
Fig 1 shows the front aspect of the cover for use with a retaining bolt that passes around the rim of a steering wheel;
Fig 2 shows a variant of the cover for use with a retaining bolt that passes around a radial arm of a steering wheel;
Fig 3 shows a rear view of cover with steering wheel positioned for fitting of retaining bolt around its rim;
Fig 4 shows a rear view of cover with steering wheel positioned for fitting retaining bolt around radial arm;
Fig 5 shows a front perspective view of the cover;
Fig 6 shows a front perspective view of a variant of the cover with lower flange absent;
Fig 7 shows a rear perspective view of of the cover;
Fig 8 shows a front perspective of one variant of the cover with one variant of the U shaped retaining bolt in position;
Fig 9 shows a side view of a variant of a U shaped retaining bolt;
Fig 10 shows a front perspective view of a variant of the U shaped retaining bolt;
Fig 11 shows a front view of a variant of the U shaped retaining bolt;
Fig 12 shows a side view of a variant of the U shaped retaining bolt;
Fig 13 shows a side view of variants of the cover and U bolt in relative position prior to fitting to a steering wheel;
Fig 14 shows a side view of variants of the cover and U bolts in relative positions prior to fitting to a steering wheel;
Fig 15 shows a front perspective view of a variant of the device with an integral locking mechanism;
Fig 16 shows a front perspective view of a variant of the device with an integral locking mechanism such as a horizontal travel lock;
Fig 17 shows a front perspective view of a variant of the cover where the retaining bolt passes around a radial arm;
Fig 18 shows a side view of a variant of the cover and retaining bolt in relative position prior to fitting the bolt around a radial arm.
With reference to the diagrams the cover consists of a front 1,with one or more holes 2,which allow the steering wheel 3 to be locked in position.The holes 2 may be fitted with raised collars 4 on the outer surface of the cover.The front is attached to sides 5,which can either be continuous as in
Fig 5 or partial as in Fig 6.The back 6 forms a flange to hold the device in place on a steering wheel.The cover serves to protect the steering wheel from either mechanical attack or removal.The cover may be moulded as one unit.
In one variant of the device the cover is held in place by means of a U shaped retaining bolt consisting of two horizontal bars 7,attached to a vertical bar 8.This vertical bar may be extended to project beyond the sides of the device producing an overall increase in length. The horizontal bars slide through the holes 2,in the front plate 1 and the collars 4.The collars protect the horizontal bars 7,particularly in the region of the locking mechanism,and may be extended over the upper surface to protect against attack.
Another variant of the U bar would be a single bent rod 9.Each variant of retaining bolt would be equipped with a component to facilitate locking such as a hole 10, for a padlock.
A wedge 11 may be positioned on the front cover in a manner to protect the horizontal arm of the U bolt.
Integral locks can take the form of padlocks 12 or horizontal slide locks 13.
Positioning of the locking device and coupling to the retaining bolt may vary,and the retaining bolt itself may be fixed so as to form an integral part of the cover.
Fitting of the device would consist of sliding the cover over the steering wheel of an unattended motor vehicle and then placing the retaining bolt in position around either the rim or radial arm.This would then be locked in place by either a separate or integral locking mechanism.
Claims (8)
