Abstract
An additive composition, for cementiferous compositions, based on a copolymer, of acrylic acid and methyl methacrylate (or salt thereof) mixed with lignosulphonate dramatically increases both the flow characteristics of the cementiferous compositions and the water reduction of said cementiferous compositions while maintaining other properties within satisfactory limits. The copolymer comprises 40 - 90 mole % acrylic acid and 10 - 60 mole % methyl methacrylate.
Description
Cementiferous comno tions Ffeld of the invention The present invention relates to cementiferous compositions and to additives for use in such compositions, which additives improve the physical characteristics of the cementiferous compositions.
Background of the invention
The cementiferous compositions with which this invention is concerned include concretes which comprises cement, coarse and fine aggregates and water; cement pastes which comprise cement and water and mortars which comprise cement, sand and water; lime sand and water, or mixtures containing both lime and cement. The invention is also applicable to steam-cured concretes comprising cement, aggregate and water; lime or limestone and siliceous materials such as silica flour and water.
Various additives for use in cementiferous compositions have been previously proposed including for example lignosulphonates, naphthalene sulphonates and water soluble melamine formaldehyde condensates.
Also various polymeric materials have been evaluated as plasticiser additives for cementiferous compositions
EP-B-0137582 (Unilever), discloses additive compositions for cementiferous compositions comprising an aqueous solution of a copolymer comprising an ethylenically polymerisable carboxylic acid and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having a hydroxyl functional group. It is disclosed in this document that dispersants such as lignosulphonates, naphthalene sulphonates or water-soluble melamine formaldehyde polymers can be added.
US-A-5047087 (National Starch and Chemical) discloses additive compositions for cementiferous compositions comprising an ethylenically polymerisable carboxylic acid and an alkyl ester of an ethylenically polymerisable carboxylic acid. This document discloses additive compositions based on acrylic acid and methyl methacrylate.
It has now been discovered that an additive composition, for cementiferous compositions, based on a copolymer, of acrylic acid and methyl methacrylate, mixed with lignosulphonates dramatically increases both the flow characteristics of the cementiferous compositions and the water reduction of said cementiferous compositions while maintaining other properties within satisfactory limits.
General descsition of she invention It is a first object of the present invention to provide an additive for cementiferous compositions comprising: a) an aqueous solution of a copolymer or a soluble salt thereof, comprising from 40 to 90 mole% of acrylic acid and from 10 to 60 mole% of methyl methacrylate, b) lignosulphonates,
It is a second object of the present invention to provide a cementiferous composition comprising as an additive an aqueous mixture of: a) an aqueous solution of a copolymer or a soluble salt thereof, comprising from 40 to 90 mole% of acrylic acid and from 10 to 60 mole% of methyl methacrylate, b) lignosulphonates.
The water content of the aqueous solution of copolymer can be between 40 and 70% by weight.
Examples of lignosulphonates are derived from fermented and fractionated spruce sulphite liquor. The preferred lignosulphonate is the sodium or calcium salt with reducing sugars below 10% by weight.
The amount of lignosulphonates used in a cementiferous composition of the present invention is preferably in the range 0.1 to 1 % by weight based on solids content of said cementiferous composition.
Absolute molecular weight of the copolymers of this invention have not been determined. However, apparent molecular weight, as calculated relative to polyethylene glycol standards have been determined using gel permeation chromatography. The apparent molecular weight of the copolymer may be varied over a wide range, the preferred range being 1,000 to 15,000.
The amount of copolymer used in a cementiferous composition of the present invention is preferably in the range 0.05 to 0.8 % by weight based on solids content of said cementiferous composition.
Therefore the weight ratio (lignosulphonates/copolymer) in the additive is between 20:1 and 1:8 preferably between 2.5:1 and 1:1.
Suitable copolymers may be made by the copolymerization of acrylic acid with methyl methacrylate using methods known in polymerisation technology. The resultant copolymer may be neutralised up to pH 7 with a suitable base such as sodium hydroxide or other soluble base and diluted with water to the required concentration for use in the cementiferous composition provided by this invention.

The present invention will be further described in the following examples.
Different tests have been done using different additive compositions added at different doses to concrete using the same design as earlier described. They were always compared with a control, i.e. a concrete to which no additive was added.
The various tested additive compositions are described below. All the additive compositions had a solids content of 308 by weight.
Invention:
- Acrylic acid/methyl methacrylate copolymer solution 60% water - 34% acrylic acid - 6% methyl
methacrylate).
- Calcium Lignosulphonate.
Comp:
- Acrylic acid/methyl methacrylate copolymer solution ( 608 water - 34% acrylic acid - 6% methyl
methacrylate).
Comp2:
- Sodium naphthalene sulphonate
Comp3:
- Sodium salt of sulphonated melamine formaldehyde
resin.
Comp4 - Calcium lignosulphonate.
In a first series of tests, different dose of additives were added and the influence on flow and compressive strength was assessed. The results are summarized in
Tables Ia, Ib, Ic.
The slump figures are only given for the control since the addition of a plasticizer makes a slump figure meaningless.
