Abstract

A kettle comprises a spout arranged so that the distal end of the spout is lower than the proximal end of the spout when the kettle is in an upright position. In use, the distal end may be introduced into a vessel into which fluid is to be poured, before tilting the kettle to an angle sufficient for water to flow through the spout. Ventilation means are provided to prevent siphoning of the fluid from the kettle. This design is suitable for kettles in use on sailing ships at sea or by handicapped people with impaired or unsteady hand movement. <IMAGE>

Description

DESCRIPTION Title of Invention:- SPOUT FOR SAFETY KETTLE.
This invention relates to a design of kettle spout that enables the kettle to be poured with less danger of spilling.
Kettles in general use on sailing ships and in general use by handicapped people with impaired or unsteady hand movement are of the wide base type with an upward pointing spout. The wide base enables the kettle to be stable when at rest, but the problem with a upward pointing spout is that when pouring from the kettle, the boiling water comes out of the spout in a trajectory. This means that the water has to be aimed into the cup or receptacle; however when used in unstable conditions at sea or used by a handicapped person with difficulty in control or co-ordination of hand movement, this is a problem as both the cup and the trajectory could be waving about in different directions. This results in hazardous spilling often causing scalding.
With this invention the downward pointing spout of the kettle is so designed that the spout itself can be placed and so located into the cup or receptacle being used. This way both the spout and the cup remain together in common movement; there is no trajectory, and the flow of boiling water can easily be controlled with less danger of spilling.
This design of downward pointing spout can be accommodated into the design of varying shapes and styles of kettles.
On a broad based type of kettle the downward pointing spout is supported / stayed back to the handle of the kettle allowing the spout to vent thr0th the steam vent hole (5).
On the tall narrower type of kettle the steam vent hole (5) is accommodated at the top of the kettle body on the opposite side to the downward pointing spout.
The detail of the invention and its purpose is illustrated in the accompanying drawings on page 5 of 5, in which : FIGURE 1, shows the problem of the kettle with the upward pointing spout (1) and the difficulty in pouring the trajectory of boiling water (2) into the cup or receptacle (3) when used in unstable conditions at sea or used by a person with difficulty in control or co-ordination of hand movement.
FIGURE 2, shows the downward pointing spout for the safety kettle (4) and steam vent (5 ) and illustrates the way the spout may be placed and so located into the cup or receptacle (3) before tilting the kettle such that the spout and cup remain together in common movement without a trajectory of boiling water. This allows the pouring operation to be carried out with less danger of spilling and subsequent scalding.
FIGURE 3, shows the downward pointing spout on a tall narrower type of kettle (6) with the steam vent (5) on the opposite side of the spout.

Claims (6)

1. A kettle having a spout arranged so the distal end of the spout is lower than the proximal end of the spout when the kettle is standing upright, and wherein, in use, said distal end can be introduced into a vessel into which fluid is to be poured before tilting the kettle to an angle sufficient for water to flow through the spout, and further having ventilation means for preventing siphoning of fluid from the kettle.
2. A kettle according to claim 1 wherein the spout generally T-shaped comprising a tubular cross-piece fitted transversely across the end of the spout of a traditional type of kettle.
3. A kettle according to claim 2 wherein the ventilation means are defined by an aperture in the cross-piece at a position above the point of fixation of the cross-piece
4. A kettle according to claim 1 which is a jug type kettle and the spout is integrally formed with the body of the kettle such that the spout projects downwardly from an upper part of the body of the kettle.
5. A kettle according to claim 4 wherein the ventilation means comprises an aperture in the body of the kettle or in the lid of at a level above the normal filling level of the kettle.
6. A kettle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of the drawings.
