Abstract

A probe holder which ensures that the probe is able to move smoothly over surface contours whilst still maintaining a constant force between the probe and surface by means of a constant force spring (2). The movement is transmitted via a slide (3) and a slide block (5). Any surface irregularities not catered for by the slide movement are catered for by movement of the forks (6) and probe or probe holder (7) via the journals (8) and (9). <IMAGE>

Description

CONSTANT FORCE ULTRASONIC PROBE HOLDER This invention relates to a constant force ultrasonic probe holder.
Mechanical manipulators are used in both the industrial and medical fields to carry out ultrasonic inspection. Manipulators are used to move an ultrasonic probe or probes over the scanned surface of the item to be inspected. The probe or probes are held in the manipulator by means of probe holders whose function is to keep the probe or probes in contact with the scanned surface. The probes are usually held in contact with the surface by means of a springing device.
The springing device used is unsatisfactory because a constant force cannot be maintained between the probe and the scanned surface if the distance between the manipulator and the scanned surface varies as the probe or probes are moved over it.
According to the present invention there is provided a constant force probe holder comprising a mounting block which holds one end of a constant force spring. The other end of the constant force spring is attached to one end of a slide rail. The force of the spring is transmitted to the probe via the slide rail which is free to move relative to the mounting block.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows the probe holder (Fig. 1).
Referring to the drawing (Fig. 1) the toolpost consists of a mounting block (1) holding one end of the constant force spring (2). The other end of the spring is fixed to a slide rail (3) via a spring mount (4). The slide rail can move freely through a slide block (5) which is fixed to the mounting block. A fork (6) which holds the probe or probe block (7) is attached to the end of the slide at the end opposite to the spring mount (4) by means of a journal (8). The probe or probe block is attached to the fork by means of a journal (9) which allows the probe or probe holder to rotate normal to the rotation of the fork.

Claims (6)

1. A constant force probe holder comprising a mounting block which holds one end of a constant force spring. The other end of the constant force spring is attached to one end of a slide rail. The force of the spring is transmitted to the probe via the slide rail which is free to move relative to the mounting block.
2. A constant force probe holder as claimed in claim 1 wherein a slide block is fastened to the mounting block in which slides the slide rail.
3. A constant force probe holder as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein a spring mount is used to fasten one end of the constant force spring to the slide rail.
4. A constant force probe holder as claimed in claim 3 wherein the fork which holds the probe or probe block is attached to the slide rail via a journal which allows rotation of the fork.
5. A constant force probe holder as claimed in claim 4 wherein a probe or probe holder is attached by a journal to the forks which allows the probe or probe holder to rotate normal to the rotation of the fork.
6. A constant force probe holder substantially described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing (Fig. 1).
