Abstract

An electric bicycle kit has a battery 2 which connects to a motor 1 which transmits motion to one or two driveheads 3, and can be used to provide power without pedalling, to assist in uphill pedalling or to increase speed. A motor control attachment 7 connected to the battery is provided on the handlebar which can be used to control speed by varying the current and on/off control. A pair of driveheads 3 (Fig. 2) may act on either the front or the rear wheel and may be connected together by a bracket and a strong spring to force the driveheads against opposite sides of the tyre. The driveheads can be separated by use of a lever 8 to allow freewheeling. The battery can be disconnected and recharged from the mains. <IMAGE>

Description

ELECTRIC BICYCLE KIT This invention relates to an electric bicycle kit.
Bicycles are well known vehicles solely manually operated.
BicycLes can be difficult to manage on hills especially for old, very young or unfit people.
According to the present invention there is provided an electric bicycle kit comprising twelve volt sealed rechargeable battery connected to a twelve volt motor whereby motion is transmitted to one or two driveheads which transnit motion to the wheel. Speed is controlled by a throttle attachment to vary current and on/off power which is attached to the handlebars. The motor can be used to provide power without pedalling, for up-hill to assist pedalling or to increase speed. 'I'he battery can be recharged through the mains with a battery charger.
The t'lectric bicycle kit can be fitted to any bicycle by most laylnen with the atd of simple instructions.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference te the acconlpanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows motion from motor directly against tyre: Figure, 2 illustrates motion from otor to tyre through flexible shatt.
Referring to the drawings the electric bicycle kit comprises a twelve volt motor 1 (similar to those used in washing machines) ) and a twleve volt sealed rechargeable battery 2 mounted on the triangular frame beneath the seat.
In Fig 1 motion can be transmitted from the battery 2 to the motor 1 which has an attached drive head 3. The inotor can be fitted to the back or front wheel to suit the rider. The head can be forced against the tyre by means of a spring and a lever 8 to transmit motion to the wheel and can be released when not needed, for freewheeling.
In Fig 2 the motor 1 can be fitted to any part of the bicycle frame.
Motion is transferred by a coiled flexible cable 4 encased in a coiled flexible tube 5 eg flexible driveshaft, from the motor to two driveheads 3.
These are connected to either front or back tyres with a bracket 6 similar to thuse used in brakes, containing a strong spring which forces (closed) the two heads 3 against either side of the tyre and can be opened with a lever 8 to provide freewhee.ing.
In botb instances an attachment is made to vary current and un/off power to control speed by means of a throttle 7 which can be fixed to the handlebar for hand use.
The battery 2 can be disconnected and recharged using a battery charger from the mains.
The electric kit can also be used for wheelchairs but would then need to be fitted with a throttle which provides reversal of current.
