Abstract

A multiple glazed unit (10) has a valve means (16) in one glazing sheet (12). The valve means has a frangible portion (20) which can be broken off to open passageway (18) to permit pressure equalisation between the interior of the unit and atmosphere. Once pressure equalisation has been achieved, the unit can be broken more easily in an emergency. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Glazed units DESCRIPTION This invention concerns glazed units.
Most multiple glazed units comprise two or more sheets of glass spaced apart and sealed around their edges under at least partial vacuum which makes them very difficult to break in an emergency, such as in a fire situation Indeed, in some cases it has been impossible for a trapped person to exert sufficient force to break the unit for escape resulting in fatality An object of this invention is to provide a means of facilitating breakage of a multiple glazed unit in an emergency According to the invention there is provided a multiple glazed unit having a valve means for selectively permitting pressure equalisation between the unit interior and atmosphere.
Preferably the valve means may be opened in any suitable way In one preferred embodiment, the valve means has a frangible portion, which when broken off opens a passageway between the unit interior and atmosphere The valve means may be fitted to a new multiple glazed unit or may be fitted to an existing multiple glazed unit in situe The invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a multiple glazed unit with valve means fitted; Figure 2 is a section through the unit of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a section through the unit of Figure 1 with the valve means opened Referring to the accompanying drawings, a double glazed unit 10 comprising a pair of glass sheets 12 spaced apart and sealed together about their peripheries 14 under at least partial vacuum In the corner of one sheet 12 is a valve 16 The valve 16 comprises a passageway 18 for linking the interior of the unit with atmosphere The passageway 18 is sealed externally by a frangible part 20 In an emergency situation, such a fire, where it is necessary to break the double glazed unit 10 to effect an escape, the frangible part 20 is broken off allowing the pressure inside and outside the unit to equalize Then the double glazed unit is easier to break by being hit with a solid object It will be appreciated that although one type of valve has been illustrated, many other types of valve may be equally suited for the purpose of the invention.

Claims (2)

1. A multiple glazed unit having a valve means for selectively permitting pressure equalisation between the unit interior and atmosphere.
2. A multiple glazed unit as claimed in claim 1, wherein the valve means has a frangible portion; which when broken off opens a passageway between tne unit interior and atmosphere 3 A multiple glazed unit as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the frangible portion of the valve means comprises a solid continuation of the passageway with a thinning of material therebetween, whereby the frangible portion can be broken off.
4 A multiple glazed unit as claimed in claims 1j 2 or 3 wherein the valve means is made of plastics material 5. A multiple glazed unit as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the valve means is fitted to one glazing sheet of the unit 6 A multiple glazed unit as claimed in claim 5, wherein the valve means is fitted near a corner of said one glazing sheet.
7 A multiple glazed unit substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
