Description

A DOOR AND DOOR FRAME CONSTRUCTION This invention relates to a door and door frame construction.
All building structures have doors which are hung in door frames. The majority of such doors are hinged to the door frames so that the doors pivot about the door frame between open and closed positions.
Where the door is hinged to the door frame, then the door has a side edge which is adjacent a side edge of the door frame when the door is in a closed position. Hitherto, the side edge of the door has closely abutted the side edge of the door frame when the door is in the closed position. Often persons such for example as children, blind persons, infirm persons or disabled persons have tended to get their fingers trapped between the side edge of the door and the side edge of the door frame as the door is being closed. The problem is especially acute in blocks of flats where children tend to play near entrance doors and they tend to have their fingers in the wrong position when persons leaving the blocks of flats close the front doors. Often persons closing the front doors do not notice the children and the children do not anticipate the danger of getting their fingers caught. The result is often a nasty accident with the childrentsfingers getting caught between the side edge of the door and the side edge of the door frame.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, this invention provides a door and door frame construction in which the door is hinged to the door frame and in which the door has a side edge which is adjacent a side edge of the door frame when the door is in a closed position, characterised in that when the door is in the closed position, the side edge of the door and the side edge of the door frame define an angle therebetween which is of such a size as to accommodate a persons fingers therein thereby facilitating avoiding persons getting their fingers trapped between the side edge of the door and the side edge of the door frame when the door is moved from an open position to the closed position.
Preferably, the angle is formed solely by the side edge of the door being inclined at an angle to a face of the door. If desired however, the angle may be formed solely by the side edge of the door frame being inclined at an angle or, still further, the angle may be formed by both the side edge of the door and the side edge of the door frame being angled.
The door may be made of any suitable and appropriate material so that the door may be a metal door, a wooden door, or a door made of a plastics material.
Similarly, the door frame may be made of any suitable and appropriate material such for example as a metal, wood or a plastics material.
Preferably, the door is hinged to the door frame by hinges which are secured in position by anti-vandal screws.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a top view of part of a door and door frame construction.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a door and door frame construction 2 comprising a door 4 and a door frame 6. The door 4 is a metal door and it is hinged about a metal part 8 of the door frame 6 by hinges, one of which is shown as hinge 10. The hinge 10 is a standard hinge and it is secured in position by antivandal screws 12 which screw into nuts 14 welded in the door frame 6 as shown and also welded in the door 4 as shown.
As shown in the drawing, the door frame 6 is mounted on a wall extending longitudinally. The door 4 is in its closed position and it extends at right angles to the door frame 6 and therefore to the wall.
The door 4 has a side edge 16 and the door frame 6 has a side edge 18. In a known door and door frame construction, the side edge 16 of the door 4 extends at right angles to a front face 20 of the door 4. This would mean that a gap 22 formed between the two side edge edges 16, 18 would be very small and a person such as a child could easily get their fingers trapped in this gap 22 when the door 4 was being shut.
In accordance with the present invention, the door 4 is such that its side face 16 extends at an angle as shown to the front face 20. This angled side edge 16 effectively defines an angle between the two side edges 16, 18 and thus effectively enlarges the gap 22. As shown in the drawing, it is difficult for a person to get their finger 24 trapped between the side edges 16, 18 since the gap 22 is suitably larger than it would be if the side edge 16 were not angled as illustrated. The angle for the side edge 16 is chosen to be such that the gap 22 is of such a size as to accommodate apersonts fingers so that, in the event that a person should have their fingers in the gap 22 as the door 4 is being closed, then the fingers will not get trapped and possibly squashed.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the drawing has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the angle formed between the side edges 16, 18 could alternatively be achieved solely by forming the side edge 18 of the door frame 16 at an angle, or alternatively, by forming both side edges 16, 18 at an angle. The illustrated door 4 and door frame 6 are made of metal but other materials such for example as wood and plastics materials may be employed.
