Abstract

226,076. Fornaca, G. March 18, 1924. Compressing and distributing air for uses other than propulsion.-In supercharging apparatus for the internal combustion engines of motor vehicles, a tank 5 for storing the compressed air supplied to the engine is arranged in the front part of the vehicle so that it is not subjected to the heat of the power plant but is cooled by the movement of the vehicle. The air is supplied to the tank 5 by a compressor 4 driven by the engine and is delivered to the carburettor by a pipe 8. In a modification tha tank is traversed by tubes through which air encountered by the vehicle passes to give an additional cooling effect. In the modification shown :n Fig. 7 the tank is in two parts or headers arranged on opposite sides of the vehicle and connected by flattened transverse tubes 18 through which the compressed air passes. In a further modification the tank is divided into a forward part and a rear part which is provided with a partition. The two halves of the rear part are connected by two sets of tubes to the forward part. The compressed air enters one side of the rear part passes through one set of tubes to the rear part and returns through the other set of tubes to the other side of the rear part from which it passes to the carburettor. The tank may be disposed as shown between the front dumb irons.
