Abstract

The engine has an inlet and exhaust system on each side of the same cylinder with two camshafts, one for the left hand side and one for the right hand side, rotating at only one quarter speed of that of the crankshaft. Each cylinder has one inlet valve and one exhaust valve on the right hand side of the engine and one inlet valve and one exhaust valve on the left hand side of the engine operating as separate systems for each combustion cylinder. The engine will operate at speeds up to 14,000 revolutions per minute. <IMAGE>

Description

HIGH SPEED RECIPROCATING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A HIGH SPEED RECIPROCATING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.
RECIPROCATING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES ARE USED FOR MANY APPLICATIONS INCLUDING MOTOR CAR VEHICLES AND LIGHT AIRCRAFT AN IMPROVEMENT IN ENGINE PERFORMANCE CAN BE ACHIEVED IF THE ROTATIONAL SPEED CN BE INCREASED THEREBY GIVING GREATER POWER OUTPUT. THIS GREATER POWER OUTPUT CN BE PUT TO USE IN EITHER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FASTER OR REDUCING THE ENGINE SIZE TO REDUCE WEIGHT BUT MAINTAINING THE ORIGINAL POWER LEVELS OF THE LESS POWERFUL CONVENTIONAL ENGINE.
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION THERE IS PROVIDED A HIGH SPEED RECIPROCATING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE WITH INLET AND EXHAUST VALVES OPERATING ONLY ONCE IN EVERY EIGHT COMBUSTION CYCLE STEPS INSTEAD OF THE USUAL ONCE IN EVERY FOUR COMBUSTION CYCLE STEPS OF CONVENTIONAL ENGINES. A HIGH SPEED RECIPROCSTING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE HAS AN INLET AND EXHAUST SYSTEM ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SAME CYLINDER WITH TWO CAMSHAFTS, ONE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE AND ONE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, ROTHTING AT ONLY ONE QUARTER SPEED OF THAT OF THE CRANKSHAFT. ECH CYLINDER HAS ONE INLET VALVE AND ONE EXHAUST VALVE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE ENGINE AND ONE INLET VALVE AND ONE EXHAUST VALVE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE ENGINE OPERATING AS TWO COMPLETELY SEPARATE SYSTEMS WITHIN EACH COMBUSTION CYLINDER.THE RESULT IS THE HIGH SPEED RECIPROCATING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE WILL ROTATE AT SPEEDS UP TO 12,000 TO 14,000 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE.
A SPECIFIC EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION WILL NOW BE DESCRIBED BY WAY OF EXAMPLE WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DESCRIPTION IN WHICH THE HIGH SPEED RECIPROCATING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE WILL OPERATE AS DETAILED ON PAGE 2.

THIS COMBUSTION ARRANGEMENT CAN BE APPLIED TO ANY ENGINE CYLINDER LAYOUT STRAIGHT 4 CYLINDER VEE " 4 CYLINDER STRAIGHT 6 CYLINDER VEE " 6 CYLINDER VEE " 8 CYLINDER VEE " 12 CYLINDER OR ANY OTHER CYLINDER LAYOUT.
THE HIGH SPEED RECIPROCATING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE COMPRISES CYLINDERS AND TWO INLET J EXHAUST SYSTEMS, ONE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE AND ONE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, BOTH COMPLETE WITH THEIR OWN INDEPENDENT CARBURATION SYSTEMS AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS.
IN ORDER FOR THE VALVE SYSTEM TO OPERATE AT THE HIGH ENGINE SPEEDS UP TO 12,000 TO 14,000-REVOLUTION PER MINUTE, EACH INLET X EXHAUST SYSTEM OPERATES ONLY ON EACH ALTERNATE CYCLE WITH EACH OF THE VALVES ONLY OPERATING ONCE IN EVERY EIGHT COMBUSTION CYCLE STEPS. THIS IS ACHIEVED BY THE VALVES OPERATING IN THE SEQUENCE INDICATED IN THE TABLE ON PAGE 2 AND BY PROVIDING A CAMSHAFT, ROTATING AT ONLY ONE QUARTER SPEED OF THE CRNNKSHAFT SPEED, FOR EACH INLET / EXHAUST SYSTEM WITH THE LOBES CORRECTLY POSITIONED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TABLE ON PAGE 2.
IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE PROPER CRANKSHAFT TO CAMSHAFT ROTATIONAL RELATIONSHIP, THE DRIVE PULLEY RATIO ON THE CRANKSHAFT TO BOTH CAMSHAFTS IS ONE TO FOUR AND IS OPERATED THROUGH A STANDARD TIMING BELT ARRANGEMENT.
IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE IGNITION SPARK THE CYLINDER ONLY REQUIRES ONE SPARK PLUG.
