Abstract

225,757. Rogers, F. H., (Eclipse Machine Co.). March 17, 1924. Turning-gear.-In an engine starter comprising a shaft 3 mounted for longitudinal and rotary movement and carrying a loosely-mounted driving pinion 9 and a control member 11 mounted for longitudinal movement thereon and rotary movement therewith, a spring 24 urges the member 11 towards the pinion 9 and a driving connection between the members 11, 9 is under the control of the member 11. As shown, the shaft 3 is a sleeve sliding on splines 4 on the armature shaft 2 of an electric motor and moved axially by means of a shifter sleeve 7 engaged by a lever which may also switch on the motor. The sleeve carries a stop 6 for the pinion 9. The member 11 is internally threaded to engage screw threads 10 on the sleeve, and is connected to the pinion by a multiple-plate clutch, the plates 12, 13 being connected alternately to the pinion and to a drum 14 secured to the member 11 by interfitting tongues 20. The clutch plates are held in assembly by means of a flanged shell 22 and a locking ring 23, and by a locking wire 18 in a groove 19 in the pinion. At starting, the sleeve 3 is moved axially by the lever to bring the pinion into mesh with teeth on the fly-wheel, and the motor is switched on. The clutch is then tightened by the action of the screw-threads 10 and the pinion 9 is driven from the armature shaft. When the engine over-runs the pinion, the clutch is released by the screw action. If the teeth of the pinion clash with those of the fly-wheel, the continued axial movement of the sleeve 3 rotates the member 11 and the pinion, by means of the screw-threads, sufficiently to bring the pinion teeth into register between those of the fly-wheel.
