Abstract

A sealed container for the purpose of keeping the body void free of water, grit, sand and other unwanted matter but with access available to either end once opened utilizes threaded end caps locating on male threads at either end of the body which is cylindrical in shape. Each end cap has a captive seal and an integral handle. One or both caps may incorporate a fixing eyelet. Each cap may be a hollow moulding partially fitted with polyurethane foam. <IMAGE>

Description

WATERTIGHT CANNISTER - DESCRIPTION Technical Field: This invention relates to a watertight cannister.
Background: Watertight cannisters which are currently available for predominantly marine usage for the safe storage of personal items and/or safety equipment are more often than not flimsy, dull coloured, and unless specifically designed to be, are not actually watertight.
This invention overcomes all the above problems. There are also other features within this invention which are not used in current watertight cannisters available.
Essential Technical Features: This invention is cylindrical in form with a male thread form at a reduced diameter at each end. This thread form is to allow the fitting of a cap to each end of the body, thereby allowing quick and easy access into either end. The reduced thread size compared with the body produces a shoulder which greatly increases the rigidity and strength of the body (see Figure 1). The raised bead around the circumference of the body adjacent to this shoulder of the threads and the raised bead surrounding the WODI logo produces an area where a strap or purpose made holder can grip the container to secure it. Each cap is sealed by means of a shaped soft seal which is held captive within the end cap in a groove (Figs 2 and 3). Each of these end caps is hollow which provides additional buoyancy to the assembled container when it is loaded.In order to provide rigidity and additional strength to the handles this void is partly filled with polyurethane foam. In order to provide a good hand grip each end cap incorporates a large handle (Figs 2 and 3).
As can be seen in Fig 3, one or potentially both of the end caps incorporates a fixing eyelet within its structure. When either cap is screwed to the body, the seal contacts the end of the male thread form whilst the end of the cap and the shoulder of the body remain 1.5mm apart. As a twisting motion is applied to the end cap thereby producing pressure on the seal the seal distorts until the end of the cap and the shoulder of the body touch. This allows a maximum distortion of the seal by 1.5mm, which is within the recovery factor of the rubber compound.
Example: The accompany drawings show the following: Fig. 1 shows the body and part section through the body.
Fig. 2 shows the plain style end cap and section through the plain style end cap.
Fig. 3 shows the end cap with integral eyelet and section through the end cap with integral eyelet.
A watertight container is achieved by placing any combination of the above mentioned end caps against the end of the male threads of the body and rotating them until contact is made with the seals, then rotating to bring pressure upon the seals in the end caps until the caps are tight, and there are two caps, one on either end.
The container is also intended to keep the body void free of any unwanted matter whether it be water, grit, sand or any other type of matter.

Claims (13)

CLAIMS - paragraphs 10-14. Define the invention by setting out clearly its distinctive technical features.
1. A watertight cannister which has access into each end afforded by means of detachable caps. Each cap has its own captive seal fitted within it.
2. Has a large integrated handle within each end cap.
3. Has a secure rope fixing eye integral with one (or both if required) end cap.
4. Has modified buttress thread forms within it to give strength and security when assembled.
5. Soft, shaped seals are used to provide the watertight integrity.
6. The seals are captivated within a groove in each end cap.
7. The seals produce the watertight joint between the caps and the body by distorting rather than compressing.
8. 1.5mm distortion of the seals is permitted. The face of the end cap and shoulder of the body butt together to prevent any over-distortion of the seals.
9. The end caps are a hollow moulding to give additional buoyancy to the container.
10. Each hollow end cap is partially filled with polyurethane foam to give rigidity.
11. A raised bead around the circumference of the body adjacent to the shoulder of the threads and the raised bead surrounding the WODI logo produces an area where a strap or purpose made holder can grip the WODI container to secure it.
12. The thread diameters being smaller than that of the body produce shoulders which aid the rigidity of the body.
13. The cannister will also keep the body void free from not only water but also grit, sand, and matter of a similar nature, when both end caps are securely tightened.
