Abstract

223,593. Vulcan-Werke Hamburg und Stettin Akt.-Ges. Oct. 17, 1923, [Convention date]. Addition to 213,156. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.- The ships driving gear described in the parent Specification is modified by placing the hydraulic clutches for the forward and reversing mochanical gearing at opposite ends of each internal combustion engine. Forward and reverse hydraulic clutches 3, 4 are placed at opposite ends of the engine 1. The clutch 3 drives the shaft 9 direct through gears 5, 6 and the clutch 4 drives it through gears 5, 7 and an intermediate gear. The clutches are emptied and filled through openings 10 and passages in the ends of the crankshaft. The shaft 9 may be in two portions fitted with a clutch intermediate of the gears 6, 7, or with a single piece shaft the gear 7 may be coupled thereto by a clutch. The control of these extra clutches may be coupled to the controls of the emptying and filling devices of the hydraulic clutches. The combined power and transmision unit is applicable to locomotives or motor road vehicles.
