Abstract

A shelving assembly in which upright supports penetrate the individual shelf thickness through apertures therein, with the shelf itself bearing upon transverse pegs through apertures in the uprights.

Description

ADJUSTABLE SELF-ASSEMBLY SHELVING SCHEME There is a range of adjustable self-assembly shelving schemes available on the market at present. Some of them are based on a combination of strips of parallel tracks with holes for attaching the supports on which the shelves rest. This allows for both vertical and horizontal flexibility, but it requires a strong, sound wall to which the tracks are attached.
Also, because they are made of metal, they are less sympathetic to a home environment than, for instance, shelving made of wood. Another type of adjustable self-assembly shelving is made of wood. It relies on a vertical support which rests on the floor. Ledged between vertical members are shelves with appropriate metal hooks. They are locked in open-sided metal rings attached to the vertical supports. This allows for horizontal flexibility, that is for regulating the distance between the shelves. However, the width of the individual and of the combined units which comprise these shelving systems is fixed, and cannot be altered.
Other self-assembly shelving systems fall within either of these two types. Those which are horizontally and vertically flexible rely for support on a strong vertical wall attachment.
Those which rest on a floor rely on their own frame-like structure for support.
Consequently, any alterations in width or height which would require changes in this structure are impossible. Only the distance between the shelves is flexible.
This self-assembly shelving system comprises: a) horizontal members n" 1 - shelves which can be made from a variety of suitable material, preferably from wood. All the shelves have a number of cut-out holes, each of which is able to accommodate a vertical member (pillar) b) horizontal members n" 2 -- dowelling which is cut to an appropriate length, depending on the combination selected within the described system c) vertical members - the pillars, preferably made from the same material as that used for the shelving, most probably from wood. The dimensions of the pillars used must be no greater than the size of the cut-out holes in the shelves. Each pillar has a set of pre-drilled holes which are able to accommodate the dowelling.The number of holes and distance between them can vary according to requirement, as long as all the pillars used within any given unit have holes pre-drilled on the corresponding levels.
All the members can be shortened individually to suit requirements.
The shelving system comprises shelves with holes, pillars with holes, and dowelling.
According to the space available (vertical and horizontal), the shelves, pillars, and dowelling are adjusted by cutting them to the right length. The assembling can be organised in a variety of ways in accordance with the available space and the number of people involved in the assembling.
In order to assemble fully any particular combination of shelving, the vertical members (pillars) are inserted through the cut-out holes of the horizontal members (shelves).
Thus, according to the particular method of assembly, the individual consecutive shelves are either lifted up or lowered down or moved just above their proper places. 'Above' in this instance refers to when the shelving is standing in an upright position. The horizontal members n" 2, the dowelling, which provide the means of support for a particular shelf, are inserted as the shelves are being set in place, across one or more of the pillars through their pre-drilled holes, which are positioned on the same levels in each pillar. The assembly of the shelving is completed when it is standing upright with the horizontal members n" 1 (the shelves) supported by the horizontal members n" 2 (the dowelling) held above the floor level by means of the vertical members (the pillars) which rest on the floor.
Following completion of the assembling, the whole shelving unit is positioned where it is intended to stand. One shelf, preferably a top one, or one or more of the pillars should then be fixed in place against the surrounding wall(s). This can be done by any type of attachment (not shown) made of either wood, plastic, metal, or any other suitable material.
After securing the attachment firmly to the wall, this shelving system is ready to be used.
If required, the whole unit can be dismounted in reverse order.

  1. claims 1 A shelving assembly in which upright support posts are located in apertures in a shelf, the posts incorporating transverse apertures to receive support pegs, upon which an individual shelf bears.
