Description
STAY
This invention relates to stays for doors, windows and the like closures hingedly mounted on a frame for opening and closing movement relative to the frame.
In our co-pending UK Patent Application
No.2,205,897-A we describe a stay in which a stay arm pivotally mounted at one end on the closure is provided with a security device remote from the pivot mounting for engagement with an upstanding peg of a hook plate mounted on the closure or frame to prevent lifting movement of the stay arm to release the stay when the closure is closed.
The security device comprises a rotatable barrel operable to move the legs of a hairpin spring arranged within the channel-section of the stay arm towards each other to engage opposed undercut faces of the hook plate peg extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm.
According to the present invention we provide a stay for doors, windows and the like closures hingedly mounted on a frame for opening and closing movement relative to the frame, the stay comprising a stay arm pivotally connected at one end to a bracket adapted for mounting on the closure, a hook plate adapted for mounting on one of the closure and frame, the hook plate having an undercut formation extending obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the arm when the arm is located on the hook plate in a closed position of the closure, and a security device mounted on the arm remote from the bracket for engagement with the undercut formation of the hook plate in the closed position of the closure to prevent lifting movement of the arm to release the stay.
Preferably, the hook plate has an upstanding peg on which the arm is located in the closed position of the closure and the undercut formation is provided by a recessed or projecting portion of the peg.
Advantageously, the peg has a pair of diametrically opposed undercut formations. In this way, the hook plate is suitable for right and left hand mounting of the stay.
Preferably, the peg is of generally rectangular shape in plan view and the or each undercut formation is provided at a respective corner of the peg.
Conveniently, the stay arm is of generally inverted channel-section and the security device is engageable with the hook plate within the channelsection.
Preferably, the security device comprises a retainer and an actuator arranged to displace the retainer to engage the undercut formation when the arm is located on the hook plate in the closed position of the closure.
Advantageously, the retainer comprises a latch plate pivotally mounted within the channel-section and the actuator comprises a barrel rotatably mounted within the channel section between opposed sidewalls of the arm and having a cam groove engaged by the latch plate for effecting pivotal movement of the latch plate on rotation of the barrel.
Preferably, the cam groove is shaped such that the latch plate is pivotal from an inoperative position in which it lies alongside and parallel to one sidewall to an operative position in which it extends obliquely towards the other sidewall for engagement with the undercut formation of the hook plate on rotation of the barrel in one sense, and rotation of the barrel in the opposed sense returns the latch plate to the inoperative position.
With this arrangement the stay arm may be lowered onto the hook plate when the latch plate is in the inoperative position and is retained against displacement to release the stay by rotation of the barrel to pivot the latch plate to the operative position engaging the undercut formation in the hook plate.
This arrangement in which the hook plate has at least one undercut formation extending obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm or engagement by a pivotal latch plate is simpler to anuracture and assemble than the arrangement disclosed in our copending Application No.2,205,897-A in which the hook plate has opposed undercut formations extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm for engagement by two spring legs.
In one embodiment the actuator has a lock in the barrel operable by a key for rotating the barrel and enabling the stay to be locked in the operative position of the latch plate for added security.
In another embodiment the actuator has a thumb turn at the end of the barrel accessible to the user for rotating the barrel.
Other features and advantages of the invented stay will be understood from the description of exemplary embodiments given later herein and it will be appreciated that the invention has application to a wide range of styles and designs of stays.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a stay according to the present invention as fixed to a casement window shown in the closed position;
FIGURE 2 is an exploded isometric view of part of the stay shown in Figure 1;
FIGURES 3 and 4 are underneath plan and side views respectively, partly in section, showing the stay arm and hook plate engaged with the security device in an inoperative position;
FIGURES 5 and 6 are underneath plan and side views respectively, partly in section, showing the stay arm and hook plate with the security device in an operative position; and
FIGURE 7 is a perspective view showing an alternative actuator for the security device of the stay shown in Figures 1 to 6.
Referring first to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, a casement stay 1 is shown fixed to a casement window comprising a glazed casement 2 mounted by hinge means (not shown) for pivotal movement about a vertical or horizontal axis relative to a fixed frame 3.
The stay 1 comprises a stay arm 4 of generally inverted channel-section connected at one end by a concealed swivel pivot connection (not shown) to a mounting bracket 5 releasably secured to the casement 2 by screws 6.
A peg plate 7 is releasably secured by screws (not shown) to the fixed frame adjacent to the pivotted end of the stay arm 4. A hook plate 8 is releasably secured by screws 9 to the casement 2 remote from the bracket 5 and aligned with the free end of the stay arm 4 which carries a key-operated security device 10 adjacent to a hand grip part 11 of the stay.
The casement 2 is shown closed with the stay arm 4 extending substantially parallel to the inner shut face of the casement 2 and engaging both the peg plate 7 and the hook plate 8. In this way, the casement 2 is drawn into weathertight engagement with the rebate 12 of the frame 3 and the stay arm 4 is secured against pivotal movement in a horizontal plane to open the casement 2.
In known manner, the stay arm 4 is formed on the underside with a plurality of axially spaced blind recessses (not shown) for selective engagement by an upstanding peg (not shown) of the peg plate 7 to hold the casement 2 in any one of a range of open positions (not shown).
The security device 10, shown in more detail in
Figures 2 to 6, includes an actuator 13 comprising a cylindrical lockable barrel 14 having a key-hole 15 for insertion of a key (not shown) to operate a lock (not shown).
The barrel 14 is rotatably mounted in aligned recesses 16 formed in the opposed sidewalls 17 of the stay arm 4 and is retained by a cover plate 18 having fixing holes 19 by means of which it is secured to the stay arm 4 by rivets, screws or similar fastening means (not shown).
The rotational axis of the barrel 14 is normal to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm 4 and the barrel 14 is retained against axial displacement by external annular end flanges 20.
The security device 10 further includes a retainer 21 operable by the actuator 13 for co-operating with an upstanding peg 22 of the hook plate 8 to secure the stay arm 4 against upward lifting movement to release the stay 1 when the casement 2 is closed.
The retainer 21 comprises a latch plate 23 of flat stainless steel strip pivotally mounted at one end on a pivot pin 24 depending from the underside of the stay arm 4 and the other end is received in a cam groove 25 formed in the barrel 14.
The pivot axis of the latch plate 23 is normal to the rotational axis of the barrel 14 and to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm 4 and is offset to one side of the longitudinal axis of the stay arm 4 adjacent to one of the sidewalls 17.
The cam groove 25 extends in the axial and circumferential directions of the barrel 14 such that the latch plate 23 is pivotal from an inoperative position shown in Figures 3 and 4 in which it lies alongside and parallel to the adjacent sidewall 17 of the stay arm 4 to an operative position shown in
Figures 5 and 6 in which it extends towards the opposed sidewall 17 of the stay arm 4 at approximately 450 to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm 4 by rotation of the barrel 14 in one sense, and is returned to the inoperative position by rotation of the barrel 14 in the opposed sense.
The hook plate peg 22 is of rectangular shape in plan view and the cover plate 18 has a rectangular access opening 26 for passage of the upper end of the peg 22 when the stay arm 4 is located on the hook plate 8 in the closed position of the casement 2.
The upper end of the peg 22 is formed with two recesses 27 at opposite corners which extend obliquely at 450 relative to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm 4 when the latter is located on the peg 22.
In use, with the latch plate 23 in the inoperative position, the stay arm 4 is pivotal to engage the peg plate 7 and hook plate 8 to hold the casement 2 closed.
To secure the stay arm 4 and prevent release of the stay 1, the barrel 14 is rotated by means of a key inserted in the key-hole 15 to pivot the latch plate 23 to the operative position in which it engages the adjacent undercut recess 27 of the hook plate peg 22.
In this way, the stay arm 4 is secured against displacement either by manually lifting the stay arm 4 or by rattling the casement 2 to disengage the hook plate 8 until the barrel 14 is rotated in the opposed sense to pivot the latch plate 23 to the inoperative position. The barrel lock may be a cylinder lock of known type enabling the stay 1 to be locked for added security by removing the key in the operative position of the latch plate 23 to prevent rotation of the barrel 14 precluding accidental or unauthorised release of the stay 1 until the key is re-inserted.
Referring now to Figure 7, an alternative actuator 13' is shown in which the barrel 14' is rotatable by means of a thumb turn 30 at the end of the barrel 14' and does not have the locking facility of the barrel 14 above-described. In other respects the actuator 13' is similar to and may be used in place of the actuator 13 in the security device 10 above-described.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments above-described. For example, the latch plate may comprise a flat strip of any suitable material having the required strength.
Where provided, the key-operated lock may be a cylinder lock, a resilient detent or any other suitable device operable by a key to secure and release selectively the barrel.
The hook plate may have a single oblique undercut formation for engagement by the latch plate but preferably two oblique undercut formations are provided as described for right and left hand mounting of the stay.
The hook plate may be adapted for mounting on the frame and/or the peg may have a shape other than rectangular in plan view, for example oval.
The oblique undercut formation(s) may extend at any selected angle in the range 300 to 600 to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm when located over the peg.
The undercut formation(s) may be provided by a recessed portion of the peg as described or by a projection such as a rib or the like extending obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the stay arm when located over the peg.
The stay arm may have a wide range of styles and designs and may be made of metal, alloy, plastics or any combination thereof to which any desired surface finish may be applied as desired.
The stay arm may be arranged for engagement with the peg plate and hook plate to secure the casement in the closed position as described and in a partially open vent position with the security device being engageable with the hook plate in both positions.
Finally, it will be understood that the invention has application to closures for windows, doors and the like.
