Abstract

In a method of patterning a workpiece, a negative image of the pattern to be etched is deposited on the workpiece, and the protective deposition is removed after etching by blasting with particulate etching material. The protective deposition may be formed by latex or a hardenable fluidised plastics material applied by a screen printing technique.

Description

Method of Patterning Solid Workpieces This invention relates to a method of forming a pattern on a solid workpiece, more particularly a workpiece of wood or glass.
The term "pattern" is used herein generically, and includes letter and figure configurations, pictures, logos, decorative motifs and designs and all possible combinations thereof.
Sand blasting is a well known technique with various applications, for example as a preliminary step to be taken in the restoration of antique furniture, or for cleaning wood beams or the like or for aging new wood to impart an antique appearance. In complete contrast, the technique is also employed for etching automobile glass with a security code or the like by blasting the sand on to the glass through a small, thin metal stencil. It is therefore practicable to pattern a wood or glass workpiece with a more complex design through a suitable complex metal stencil.In the etching of glass with a security code, however, where the thin metal stencil is stamped out by machine (in the form of individual characters which are then assembled in a frame), etching is effected by directing an extremely fine etching powder through the stencil under a relatively low blasting pressure of about 80 p.s.i., and the method is practicable only because relatively slight or shallow etching is required.
The technique would make no impression on wood, and could not be used for decorative patterning of glass, e.g.
mirrors. For effective patterning of wood or glass, using a very much higher blasting pressure, a much thicker gauge metal stencil would be required, expensive and timeconsuming to produce and yet even then having a very limited life possibly of only a single usage.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method of patterning a solid workpiece according to which a negative image of the pattern in the form of a rubber or rubber-like, plastics or other suitable protective material is deposited on the workpiece at the area to be patterned, the said area of the workpiece is etched by blasting with sand or other particulate etching material, thereby to etch the pattern into the workpiece in accordance with the regions not protected by the deposited protective layer resistant to the incident etching material, and the deposited protective layer is removed, as by lateral abrading, in a manner which leaves the etched pattern substantially undamaged.
The protective layer of rubber or other suitable protective material may be applied by a conventional screen printing technique using an etched nylon screen, but latex or a hardenable fluidised plastics material is squeezed through the net on to the workpiece, instead of squeezing through ink, as in conventional screen printing.
In one practical example of the method in accordance with the invention, applied to pattern a workpiece of wood, of metal or of glass, especially the latter two, a nylon screen is formed with a positive image of the pattern by photographic and acid cutting techniques analogous to those conventionally employed in line blocking and screen printing.
The patterned nylon screen is then positioned in uniformly slightly spaced relationship to the workpiece and latex is squeezed through the screen to deposit a protective rubber layer on the workpiece which leaves exposed the surface regions of the workpiece which form the pattern. As an alternative to latex, any fluid material which will solidify to provide protection of the workpiece at the regions not to be patterned, may be applied to the workpiece through the screen.
The workpiece is then sand, bead or grit blasted at the area to be patterned. Workpiece etching is continued for the period necessary to form the pattern to a required depth.
Finally, the protective layer is removed from the workpiece, as in the case of a rubber layer by sideways sanding which avoids damage to the workpiece and the pattern thereon.
Alternatively, a suitable dissolving or cleaning agent may be employed to remove the protective layer.

Claims (10)

Claims
1. A method of patterning a solid workpiece according to which a negative image of the pattern in the form of a rubber or rubber-like, plastics or other protective material is deposited on the workpiece at the area to be patterned, the said area of the workpiece is etched by blasting with particulate etching material, thereby to etch the pattern into the workpiece in accordance with the regions not protected by the deposited protective layer resistant to the incident etching material, and the deposited protective layer is removed in a manner which leaves the etched pattern substantially undamaged.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the etching material is sand, bead or grit.
3. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the protective layer is removed by lateral abrading.
4. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the protective layer of rubber or other protective material is applied by a screen printing technique using an etched nylon screen, with latex or a hardenable fluidised plastics material squeezed through the net on to the workpiece.

A method according to claim 4, applied to pattern a workpiece of wood, of metal or of glass, especially the latter two, wherein the nylon screen is formed with a positive image of the pattern by photographic and acid cutting techniques analogous to those conventionally employed in line blocking and screen printing.

A method according to claim 5, wherein the patterned nylon screen is positioned in uniformly slightly spaced relationship to the workpiece and latex is squeezed through the screen to deposit a protective rubber layer on the workpiece which leaves exposed the surface regions of the workpiece which form the pattern.
7. A method according to any preceding claim, wherein workpiece etching is continued for the period necessary to form the pattern to a required depth.
8. A method according to claim 3, wherein the protective layer is removed from the workpiece by sideways sanding.
9. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the protective layer is removed by use of a dissclving or cleaning agent.
10. A method of patterning a solid workpiece substantially as hereinbefore described.
