Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and H1] Indicia are produced on an object having a surface of an abradable material by coating the portion of the surface with a protective composition resistant to abrasion and comprising a polyamide or a major proportion of polyvinyl alcohol or of polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl acetate and being susceptible to a solvent, rendering selected areas of the coating incapable of being acted upon by the solvent, dissolving the remainder of the coating in the solvent to present coated and uncoated portions of the surface, and abrading the surface sufficiently to remove the material from the uncoated portions. The coating composition may be light sensitive and the desired coated portions formed by exposing the coating to light so as to insolubilize the coating at these points. The object may be a multi-layer plastics or metal clad laminate where it is desired to selectively abrade certain surface areas to erode the top layer of the laminate and reveal a lower layer, e.g. two colour melamine or phenolic laminates may be selectively abraded to produce a multi-colour sign, or a copper clad insulation layer may be selectively abraided to produce a printed circuit. Glass, plastics or metal articles may be selectively abraded to produce an engraved appearance or a cut-glass effect. Small plastics, glass or metal parts may be cut from a sheet of base stock. The object may be cleaned to render it susceptible to receiving a resin coating, e.g. by degreasing and dipping in chromic cleaning solution and primed by application of a coating of polyvinyl acetate aqueous emulsion by flush coating, brushing, spraying or centrifugal spin coating. The polyvinyl alcohol-polyvinyl acetate film may be plasticized with, e.g., glycerine and may be made light sensitive by inclusion of a light-sensitizable catalyst, e.g. potassium dichromate. The coating may be applied by flush and dip coating centrifugal coating. The selectively coated object may be abraded by blasting with alumina powder, silicone carbide. After the abrading the protective coating may be removed.
