Abstract

Cushioned pads for jewellery display are formed by simultaneously high-frequency welding and cutting three layers of PVC, including a middle layer of foam plastic, using a shaped electrode having cutting edges. Each pad is generally square with two opposite ears 2 for hooking over a bar, and the electrode is fashioned with a multiplicity of such interweaved pad contours. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN JEWELLERY DISPLAY MOUNTINGS Mountings for the display of jewellery or the like usually consist of a support or frame on which may be hung, or otherwise demountably attached; small pads or carriers for carrying an individual item, or a small number of items, of jewellery. The pad or carrier will usually have slots or holes for easy push-on and pull-off of the jewellery item.
Such display pads need to have an aesthetically pleasing appearance, for example, a dark-coloured velvet finish, and also be provided with suitable part for demountable attachment to the supporting frame. A common method of production utilises a plastics moulding of the general form shown in Fig. 1. The carrier 1 has a bent-over portion 2 which hangs on a cross-piece of the frame. A carrier of this type hardly fulfils the aesthetic requirements unless additional soft material is attached e.g. by adhesive. This requires an additional production step.
Another disadvantage of this method of mounting is the ease with which the carrier can slip of the frame when inverted, for example, during transport. Although initially the bent-over portion can be formed to give a snap attachment with the bar, repeated removal eventually destroys the resilience.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a display pad adapted to hang on a supporting frame where the display pad comprises more than one layer of plastics material, these materials being together cut to the required contour by a high-frequency welding electrode shaped to this contour and having sharpened edges, the layers becoming welded together near the edges of the contour. The contour is generally square or rectangular with side-pieces, or ears, which may be bent back for hanging on the supporting frame.
It is a further object of the invention simultaneously to produce a multiplicity of such display pads, and with minimum wastage of material, by placing the ears near the top of the pad, the ears having a general outline which is anti-symmetric to the opposing space near the bottom of the pad so that adjacent pads are, during production, in upside-down relationship, with the two adjacent ears more or less filling a small rectangular space.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows the general frame-and -mount set-up to which the present invention relatess; Fig. 2 shows an array of display pads according to the invention as they are produced by the welding/cutting process; Fig. 3 shows a modification of the embodiment.
In the preferred embodiment three layers of plastics materials are used:- (1) a bottom, thin flexible layer of hard PVC or the like which will be the back of the pad; (2) a middle layer of foam plastic; (3) an upper layer of soft plastics with a flock finish.
The three layers of material are rolled off separate spools and superposed on the welding table. The high-frequency welding tool is then lowered and produces two simultaneous effects. The pad contours are cut out by the sharp electrode edges; adjacent to the pad edges all three plastics layers fuse. The result is a cushioned pad.
One form of contour for the pads is shown in Fig. 2 which shows four such pads. In practice, the welding electrode is formed with some 32 or 40 such units in opposite orientation. The body of the pad 1 is, at the same time, punctured by the electroded with suitable holes and/or slots for anchoring the piece(s) of jewellery. The ears 2 as shown are separated from the body of the pad at their lower ends 3 ('lower' in the pad's normal hanging position). The ears can thus be hooked over the frame of Fig. 1. The welding electrode is shaped to partly penetrate the upper boundary 4 between ear and pad body to facilitate bending. In this embodiment the shape of the ears ensures firm, though easily demountable, attachment to the frame.
Fig. 3 shows a simpler shape for the ear when the safer, though slightly more awkward shape of Fig. 3 is not required.
Although the description pad implies an outer layer with inner padding it is used in this specification, and in the statement of claim, in the loose sense of carrier for the jewellery which is intended to include the situation where only a single layer of material is used. Such a material may itself be composite.

Claims
1. A method of producing a display pad suitable for displaying jewellery involving the steps of forming an electrode for a high-frequency welding tool to have the shape of the desired shape of pad, this shape being generally square or rectangular with two side-pieces in the manner of ears on two opposing sides for the purpose of hooking over a bar, the electrode edges being sharpened and used to cut out the desired shape from a larger area of material used for the pad.
2. A method as claim 1 where more than one layer of material is used so that the electrode edges will both cut the shape of the pad and, at least near the pad edges, weld the layers together to give a cushion effect.
3. A method of manufacturing a pad according to claim 1 or 2 in which the the ears are both in the upper half of the pad.
4. A method of manufacturing a pad as in any previous claim in which the welding electrode is formed with a multiplicity of pad contours for multiple production of pads.
5. A method of manufacturing a pad as in claim 4 in which adjacent pad 2: contours areareKupside-down relationship, and the ears more or less fill an an intervening rectangular area between the contours of the bodies of adjacent pads so as to minimise wastage.
6. A pad for displaying jewellery produced as in any of the previous methods.
7. A method of sanufacturing a jewellery display pad substantially as herein described with refernce to the accompanying drawings.
8. A pad for displaying jewellery substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
9. A high-frequency welding electrode for use in any of the methods described in claims 1 - 5 and claim 7
