Abstract

The front part of a 40' (12, 190mm) trailer has been extended by 13" (333mm), the kingpin moved forward to 652mm from the front, and the rear wheels moved forward to 3,200mm from the roar. On the centre bolsters four additional twist locks have been mounted and a 6.1 square metres checker plate or floor has been mounted on the rear part of the trailer. The modified trailer can be used to carry one 20' container (in the middle of the trailer), two 20' containers, one 40' or 45' container and ensures safe driving. The checker plate or floor enables a fork lift to walk on and makes loading and unloading more easier and saves time and labour. <IMAGE>

Description

Polyfunctional Trailer This invention relates to a polyfunctional trailer.
According to the related regulation 45'(13,760mm) trailer are not permitted at present in Hong Kong, and the overall length of articulated vehicles are governed by the First Schedule of Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations, CAP.374, the maximum permitted overall length of an articulated vehicle being 16 metres. At present, the transportation companies have no alternative but to transport a 45'(13,760mm) container on a 40'(12,190mm) trailer.
Since the overlength of the trailer is only 40', the kingpin and rear wheels on existing trailers are in a rear back position, when a 45' container is placed on it, it is difficult to turn round and turn back.
In order to meet the requirement of the regulation, we have modified the existing 40' trailers. the modified trailers are suitable for carrying 45' 40'. one ore two 20'(6,096mm) containers. the invention has been approved by the Transport Department of Hong Kong and now the modified trailers are being produced.
According to the present invention, 1) the front part of the trailer has been extended by 13" (333mm), thus the total length of the trailer is 41'1" (12,523mm). The kingpin has been moved froward to 652 mm. In this way the distance between the tractor and the trailer has been extended. As a result the kingpin can move more freely than before. It is necessary to point out, that according to regulation 55 of the Road traffic (Traffic Control) regulation, a rear overhang of 1.4 m is permitted. When 45' container is placed.on our modified trailer, the overall length of the articulated vehicles is just 16 metres, it meets the requirement of the Regulation.
2) the rear wheels have been moved forward to 3,200mm. As a result, it will be more easy to turn round and turn back. The load will be placed more evenly on the trailer and the vehicle will run more steady and safely.
3) on the centre bolster of each side of the trailer we mounted two twist locks, with the help of which you may place a 20'(6,096mm) container in the middle of the trailer. the load is distributed evenly on the trailer, thus you can drive more safely. On the other hand, when you use the ordinary trailer to carry a single 20' container, you may only either place it on the front part or on the rear part of the trailer, which does not ensure a safe drive. the modified trailer is a polyfunctional one. You may use it to carry one 20', two 20', one 40' or one 45' container. With a modified trailer, you need not buy two or more types of trailer to carry different size of containers.Then you can save a lot of time (for changing trailers), money (for buying different trailers) and parking space (for parking different trailers.) 4) On the rear part of the trailer a checker plate (measuring 3,550mm by l,720mm or 6.1 square metres) is mounted, which enables a fork lift to walk on and makes loading and unloading more easier and saves time and labour.

  1. Claims
    A polyfunctional trailer with extended front part (by 13", the total length being 41'1" [12,523mm]) forward moved kingpin (to 652mm) and rear wheels (to 3,200mm) and a checker plate (measruing 3,550mm by 1,720mum) on the rear part of the trailer, four additional twist locks on the centre bolster.
    I don't hope my invention would be imitated by anyone within the permit of the existing Road Traffic regulations. (1983ED Traffic Construction and Maintenance CAP374)
