Abstract

A trailer has a tipping load platform and means to raise its rear end, said means comprising a frame 22 on one end of which the wheel axle 20 is supported, the other end being pivotally attached to the trailer chassis 10 and a linkage including a first sub-frame 28 pivotally mounted to the chassis intermediate its ends, a second sub-frame 32 pivotally connected between one end of the first sub-frame and the free end of said frame 22 and an hydraulic ram 26 connected between said frame and the other end of the first sub-frame. The arrangement thereby prevents the front end of the trailer from moving upwards during tipping by raising the rear end of the trailer and moving the wheels 18 towards the rear. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to vehicles The present invention concerns improvements in or relating to vehicles, especially but not exclusively to vehicles having a load platform or container which is tippable relative to the vehicle chassis, for example a tipping trailer.
In existing tipping trailers when the load platform or container is tipped the centre of gravity of the load moves towards the rear of the trailer and this results in a "vertical jack-knifing". That is the front end of the vehicle tends to move upwards.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate this disadvantage by arranging for the vehicles ground engaging means, normally wheels, to have a horizontal component of movement towards the rear of the vehicle such that on tipping or in other instances where the centre of gravity of the load moves towards the rear of the vehicle the ground engaging means remain closerto the rear of the vehicle than the centre of gravity.
According to the present invention there is provided a vehicle including a chassis, ground engaging means carried by a frame mounted to the chassis adjacent one end of the chassis and means for moving the ground engaging means relative to the chassis, such that any movement of the ground engaging means away from the chassis is accompanied buy a movement thereof towards said end of the chassis.
Preferably the frame is pivotally mounted to the chassis about a first transverse axis and the means for moving it includes a linkage connected between the frame and the chassis and an hydraulic ram actuable to move the linkage and the frame.
The linkage may include a first sub-frame pivotally mounted to the chassis intermediate its ends about a second transverse axis and a second sub-frame pivotally connected to one end of the first sub-frame and to the frame at or near its free end, said ram being connected between the frame and the other end of the sub-frame.
Preferably the chassis carries a load carrying platform or container pivotally mounted thereto adjacent said one end and at least one hydraulic ram is provided between the platform and chassis for tipping the platform.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic elevation of a trailer.
Atrailer includes a chassis 10 on which a load container 12 is pivotally mounted about a transverse axis 14 at the rear of the chassis. One or more hydraulic rams 16 are arranged between the chassis near its front and the container 12 to cause a tipping movement of the container relative to the chassis.
The chassis is supported on a pair of wheels 18 the axle 20 of which is mounted at one end of a frame 22 pivotally mounted about a transverse axis 24 at the rear of the chassis 10. At least one hydraulic ram 26 is provided which, on actuation, will cause the frame 22 to pivot about its axis 24 to move the wheels away from the chassis. The hydraulic ram or rams 26 operate in conjunction with a linkage which comprises a first sub-frame 28 pivotally mounted intermediate its end to the chassis 10 about a transverse axis 30. A second sub-frame 32 is pivotally connected to the frame 22 about the axis 20 and to one end of the sub-frame 28. The other end of the sub-frame 28 being pivotally connected to the ram 26.
The trailer illustrated in the drawings is shown with the load container in a partially tipped condition and the wheels partially moved away from their normal rest position adjacent the chassis. From the position shown in the drawing it will be realised that further extension of the ram 26 will cause an anti-clockwise pivoting movement of the subframe 28 and a corresponding clockwise pivoting movement of the sub-frame 32, this resulting in an anti-clockwise pivoting of the frame 22 which causes the wheels to move further away from the chassis 10 and further towards the rear thereof. Conversely contraction of the ram 26 will cause the wheels to move towards the chassis and away from the rear thereof.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention, for example it need not be incorporated in a trailer but could be included in any load carrying wheeled vehicle. The linkage means for moving the wheels away from and towards the rear of the chassis could have any suitable form and of course it is not essential that the load platform is pivotal relative to the chassis.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
1. Avehicle including a chassis, ground engaging means carried by a frame mounted to the chassis adjacent one end of the chassis and means for moving the ground engaging means relative to the chassis, such that any movement of the ground engaging means away from the chassis is accompanied by a movement thereof towards said end of the chassis.
2. Avehicle as claimed in claim 1, in which the frame is pivotally mounted to the chassis about a first transverse axis and the means for moving it includes a linkage connected between the frame and the chassis and an hydraulic ram actuable to move the linkage and the frame.
