Abstract

220,616. Davidson, E. Aug. 17, 1923, [Convention date]. Toy guns &c.-A toy spring gun, pistol, or cannon has the barrel pivoted at its forward end to the stock or support so that it may be swung to one side for the insertion of a projectile into the breech. The projectile is arranged to leave a mark upon the target, which is constructed in such a manner that it can be cleaned or renewed. Projectors.-The stock comprises two members 2, Figs. 1 and 4, spaced apart to form a slot 1, in which a member 18 slides. The barrel 6 which has a slot 7 in its underside, is connected at its front end by a pivot pin 12 with a fork 13 secured to the stock. The barrel can be swung sideways about the pivot 12, the extent of the movement being limited by a hooked member 11 which moves through a slot in a plate 40 and is secured to the end of the barrel. The spring 17 is secured at one end within a housing 16 which is attached to the stock in line with the barrel. A plunger 25, attached to the front end of the spring, has a pin 26 which projects through the slot 7 and is engaged by a spring 23 secured to the member 18. Thus when the member 18 is moved to the position shown in dotted lines, the spring 17 is compressed within the housing and the member 18 is retained in this position by engagement with a shoulder 28 formed on the stock. The barrel can now be moved sidewavs for the insertion of the projectile, which is held in position by a spring tongue 39 formed inside the barrel. Pressure on the trigger depresses the spring 23 and releases the pin 26. Projectiles.-The projectile consists of a tube 34, Fig. 5, of cardboard, wood, or light metal closed at the rear by a plug 35 of wood, and at the front by a rubber sheath 36 enclosing a plug 37 of felt which is impregnated with a coloured fluid. The sheath extends beyond the felt so that the latter can only make a mark when the sheath is driven backward on itself by impact with the target. Targets.-The target may consist of smooth material which does not absorb the coloured fluid, so that it may be washed to remove the marks. Alternatively, it may consist of superposed sheets, like a memorandum block, which can be removed one at a time when used.
