DESCRIPTION
2203689 PLASTICS PLPING CONNECTION SEALING MEMBER The present invention relates to a connector for pipework made of vinyl chloride-based resin, comprising a thermoplastic rubber sealing ring fixed in place by weld ing in the connector.
It has already been proposed to make connectors for pipework from plastic employing a thermoplastic rub ber sealing ring fixed by welding in the connector.
Thus, in Belgian Patent A-861021 and in French Patent Application A-2,444,864, a connector made from potyolefin which is equipped with a sealing ring made of ethylene-propylene-diene-methylene rubber vulcanised in sulphur or with a sulphur-donating substance, which can be fixed in place by welding in the connector, is disclosed.
However, it is not a valid proposition to fix a sealing ring made from a material of this kind by welding in a pipework connector made from vinyl chloride-based resin, on account of a lack of compatibility.
Admittedly, in Belgian Patent A-867993, it has been proposed to make pipework connectors from vinyl chlo ride-based resin, equipped with a thermoplastic rubber sealing ring obtained from plasticised polyvinyl chloride compositions containing nitrile rubber and polyurethane which is fixed by welding, but, to obtain satisfactory products in this case, it is necessary to subject at least one of the connector components to an irradiation with very penetrating radiation for the purpose of producing crosstinking. In this technique, it is accordingly neces sary to use compositions based on plasticised polyvinyl chloride, in which compositions the desired crosstinking reaction predominates over the degradation induced by the 2 crossLinking. In any case, to make such connectors, it is necessary to have recoum tQ an irradiation ptant, to arrange for an irradiation stage and to take aLL the pre cautions which are essentiaL in irradiation operations.
It is has now been found that it is possibLe, in conventionaL production pLants, to produce connectors for pipework made of vinyL chLoricle-based resin comprising a thersopLastic rubber seaLing ring which can be fixed in pLace in the connectors by weLding, this being accompLi shed without the need to perform any kind of irradiation treatment.
The invention-accorclingLy reLates to a connector for pipework made of vinyL chLoricle-based resin, compri sing a thermopLastic rubber seaLing ring fixed by weLding in the connector, in which the seaLing ring is made from a partiaLLy vuLcanised mixture of a copoLymer of ethyLene with at Least one copoLymerizabLe comonomer and 5 to 75%, and preferabLy 20 to 60%., by weight based on the mixture, of a vinyL or vinyLiclene haLicle poLymer.
VinyL chLoricle-based resin is understood to denote homopoLymers of vinyL chLoricle as weLL as copoLymers con taining at Least 50 moL % of units derived from vinyL chLoricle.
Among the comonomers which can be copoLymerized with ethyLene, ethyLenicaLLy unsaturated monomers such as mono- or clicarboxyLic acids and the esters derived there from, vinyL esters, acryLic or methacryLic monomers, car bon monoxide and suLphur dioxide are generaLLy preferred.
The vinyL or vinyLiclene haLicle poLymer can be a homopoLymer or a copoLymer containing, in particuLar, units derived from vinyL esters, from acryLonitriLe, from acryLic esters, from vinyL or vinyLiclene chLoricle, from unsaturated carboxyLic acids or from vinyL ethers, the pre ferred poLymer being poLyvinyL chLoricle.
Mixtures which are especiaLLy suitabLe for making the seaLing ring, as weLL as the method for manufacturing them, are described in the document EP-A-0,101,833, the content of which is accordingLy incorporated in the pre sent description by reference.
3 The mixtures for making the sealing ring of the connector according to the invention are specially vulcanised, pre ferably to a gel content of 10 to 70% measured by dissolu tion in tetrahydrofuran, as described in the document EP-A-0,101,833 cited above.
These mixtures can also contain customary addi- tives, such as filler materials, lubricants, stabilisers andlor plasticisers.
Mixtures which are especially suitable for making the sealing ring of the connelctor according to the inven tion are produced and sold by the firm E.I. du PONT de NEMOURS under the trade name "ALCRYC. These mixtures re main thermally stable up to at least 2000C, can be readily moulded by injection or compression in conventional plants and require no vulcanisation operation during their moulding.
According to a first variant of embodiment of the connector for pipework according to the invention, the sealing ring and the connector made of vinyl chloride based resin can be separately moulded by customary techni ques such as compression moulding, injection moulding or thermoforming, the moulding of the sealing ring being car ried out at a temperature of between 140 and 1900C. In this case, the previously moulded sealing ring is then in troduced into the connector and fixed in place by welding, by a conventional fechnique.such as hot plate welding, ultrasonic welding, electrical resistance welding, fric tion welding, high-frequency welding or vibration welding.
The sealing ring can obviously be shaped in such a way that the fixing thereof is carried out on an inner andlor outer face of the connector. A fixing on the outer face of the connector can, in fact, prove useful when it is desired to protect the end of the connector against impact.
When the fixing is carried out by the hot plate welding technique, a plate temperature of 200 to 2400C, a welding pressure of 0.1 to 0.3 N1mm 2 and a welding time of 15 to 60 seconds are generally employed.
According to another variant of embodiment of the connector for pipework which proves less expensive, the 4 connector and the seaLing ring can be aLtered simuLtaneousLy by the co-injection technique, as described, in particuLar, in the documents BE-A-838058, BE-A-853292, EP-A-0,031,620, EP-A-0,188,012, EP-A-0,189,300 and EP-A-0,188,301. In this case, the temperature of injection of the materiaL forming the seaLing ring is chosen so as to provide for the direct fixing by weLding of the mouLded seaLing ring in -the connector.
According to a third variant, the seaLing ring, equipped with a rigid reiaining ring made of pLastic, pre ferabLy poLyvinyL chLoride, fixed by weLding, can be pro duced separateLy, for exampLe by the co-injection technique and this assembLy is then inserted and fixed by weLding via the retaining ring in the mouLded connector. A tech nique of this type is described in the document GB-A 2,144,190.
In the connector according to the invention, it is aLso possibLe, if so desired, to mouLd a seaLing ring reinforced with a metaL or other internaL insert. This insert can, in particuLar, be an eLectric resistance in the case where a subsequent fixing by eLectric weLding is envisaged.
The connector for pipework according to the inven- tion can be either an end-to-end spigot-and-socket connec tor of any type, or a branch connector as described in the document BE-A-833318.
The connector for pipework according to the inven- tion is Mustrated by the figures in the atiached draw ings, wherein Figures 1 to 3 show a partiaL view of the variants of possibLe embodiment of spigot-and-socket con nectors, and Figure 4 a view of a branch connector. In these figures, the thermopLastic rubber seaLing ring 1 according to the invention is fixed by a weLd 2 on the inner and/or outer waLLs of the connector 3 mouLded in rigid poLyvinyL chLoride.
The connector for pipework according to the inven- tion is aLso Mustrated by the description which foLLows of an exampLe of practicaL embodiment of a connector of the type Mustrated in Fig. 2.
ExampLe
A sea Ling ring having the profiLe shown in Fig. 2 is made by transfer mouLding using granuLes of ALCRYN re sin, of Shore A hardness 70, as the materiaL.
For this purpose, a measured quantity of the mate- riaL is pLaced in the die maintained at 1800C and, after a heating time of 10 minutes, compression mouLding is per formed. After the die has been cooLed to room tempera ture, the mouLded seaLing ring is extracted.
The seaLing ring thereby obtained is then fixed on the end of the poLyvinyL chLoride connector, premouLded by thermoforming, by the hot pLate weLding technique. For this purpose, the pLate is maintained at 2200C, the weLd ing pressure appLied is 0.2 N/mm 2 and the weLding time is 30 seconds.
After cooLing, it is found that the seaLing ring is compLeteLy weLded onto the connector., and that this ring tears when an attempt is made to strip it from the connector, this occurring without the weLd yieLding.
It will be understood that the invention has been described above purely by way of example, and that various modifications of detail can be made within the ambit of the invention.

Claims (11)

1. Connector for pipework made of vinyL chLoride based resin, comprising a thermopLastic rubber seaLing ring made from a partiaLLy vuLcanised mixture of a copoLy mer of ethyLene with at Least one copoLymerizabLe monomer and 5 to 75%, by weight based on the mixture, of a vinyL or vinyLidene haLide poLymer, characterized in that the seaLing ring is fixed in the connector by weLding.
2. Connector according to CLaim 1, characterized in that the seaLing ring is fixed by weLding by the hot pLate technique.
3. Connector according to CLaim 1, characterized in that the seaLing ring is fixed by uLtrasonic weLding.
4. Connector according to CLaim 1, characterized in that the seaLing ring is fixed by friction weLding.
5. Connector according to CLaim 1, characterized in that the seaLing ring is fixed by eLectric weLding.
6. Connector according to CLaim 1, characterized in that the seaLing ring is fixed by high-frequency weLding.
7. Connector according to CLaim 1, characterized in that the seaLing ring is made and fixed by co-injection.
8. Connector according to CLaim 1, characterized in that the seaLing ring is fixed by weLding onto a fixing ring made of vinyL chLoride-based resin, which is then firmLy united to the connector.
9. Connector according to CLaim 1, characterized in that the seaLing ring is fixed by co-injection on to a fixing ring made of vinyL chLoride-based resin, which is then firmLy united to the connector.
10. Connector according to claim 1, substantially as described with reference to any Figure or Figures of the accompanying drawings.
11. Connector according to claim 1, substantially as described in the foregoing Example.
