Abstract

A rolling bearing has at least one shoulder (5) which is loose and is secured to the associated bearing ring (6) directly or indirectly through a thread. In order to simplify considerably the manufacture of such a rolling bearing, an annular groove (10) is provided on the bearing ring (6) in which groove there is inserted a ring (12) which is provided with a thread (11) and onto which the shoulder (5) is screwed. The loose shoulder may alternatively be held in place by a fluted nut (22, Fig.2). <IMAGE>

Description

Rolling Bearing This invention relates to a rolling bearing of the type having at least one shoulder which is made loose and is secured to the associated bearing ring or the like directly or indirectly via a thread.
In order to facilitate the assembly of rolling bearings and also to be able to adjust the bearing clearance of the rolling bearing. it is known to make at least one of the shoulders loose and to secure this to the associated bearing ring after the rolling bodies have been introduced.
Thus it is known to make one of the shoulders of a rolling bearing loose and with a thread and to screw this onto a thread machined directly in a portion of the bearing ring (FR-PS 363 128).
Furthermore, it is known to displace the loose shoulder of a rolling bearing towards the rolling bodies by means of a separate annular nut in order to adjust the rolling bodies without clearance (GB-PS 341 363).
It is common to both constructions that the thread for securing the shoulder is machined directly in the bearing ring which generally has to be hardened in order to achieve the necessary carrying capacity of the bearing. The threaded portion itself should generally not be hardened because otherwise the thread is stripped, a requirement for the fulfilling of which, special measures have to be taken during manufacture. Thus this threaded portion has to be masked during the hardening, for example, or be annealed again after the hardening. For these reasons, these constructions have not been able to become established in practice.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a rolling bearing of the type mentioned at the beginning which is considerably simpler to manufacture.
According to the invention, this is solved in that an annular groove is provided on the bearing ring, in which groove there is inserted a ring or the like provided with a thread onto which is screwed the loose shoulder or a fluted nut locating the loose shoulder.
As a result of the use of a separate ring provided with a thread, it is not necessary to machine the thread directly in the bearing ring and to take precautions to see that it remains unhardened during the hardening of the bearing ring. The bearing ring is merely provided with an annular groove in which the separately manufactured ring provided with the thread is inserted after the bearing ring has been finish-machined.
The problem that a thread cannot be machined directly in the bearing ring or can only be so with great expense may also arise with rolling bearings of other materials which are difficult to machine, for example of ceramic. The subject of the invention likewise leads to considerable advantages for such bearings if the ring provided with the thread is made of a material which can be machined more easily.
In order to facilitate the insertion of the ring provided with the thread, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is slit at least at one point of the circumference. As a result, it is possible to expand the ring provided with the thread and to allow it to spring into the annular groove provided in the peripheral surface of the bearing ring. When the loose shoulder is secured to the outer ring, the ring provided with the thread is contracted and springs open again after being inserted in the bore in the region of the annular groove.
It is easily possible, and with large dimensions it is advisable, to divide the ring provided with the thread into a plurality of segments. As a result, assembly is considerably facilitated. Corresponding projections and recesses may be provided in order to be able to fix the individual parts to one another.
In order generally to prevent joint rotation of the ring provided with a thread, it is secured against rotation by suitable means. Notching is sufficient for this in the simplest case.
By means of the invention, it is possible to provide rolling bearings which comprise a large number of rolling bodies, that is to say have a high radial and axial carrying capacity. It is likewise possible to adjust the (axial) bearing clearance accurately so that a precise location and guiding of the parts to be mounted is achieved. In addition, when manufacturing the rolling bearing from materials which are difficult to machine, a solution is provided whereby a shoulder can be secured easily and securely to the bearing ring without great manufacturing expense.
The present invention will be described in more detail below with reference to two examples of embodiment illustrated in the drawing.
Figure 1 shows a single-row full-type cylindrical roller bearing with four shoulders, one of which is made loose, and Figure 2 shows a double-row taper roller bearing wherein one of the guide shoulders of the inner ring is made loose.
The cylindrical roller bearing shown in Figure 1 consists of an inner ring 3 provided with two fixed shoulders 1 and 2 and an outer ring 6 provided with a fixed shoulder 4 and a loose shoulder 5, and the cylindrical rollers 7 disposed between the bearing rings 3 and 6. In order to secure the loose shoulder 5 there is machined in the portion 9 which is offset in relation to the track 8 of the outer ring 6, an annular groove 10 in which the slit ring 12 provided with an internal thread 11 is inserted.
The loose shoulder 5 provided with an external thread 13 is screwed into the internal thread 11 until its end face comes to bear bear against the end faces of the rollers 7. The loose shoulder 5 can be secured against rotation by a suitable securing means after being screwed in.
In Figure 2, a double-row taper roller bearing is illustrated, the inner ring 14 of which is provided at one end 15 with an offset portion 17 which is smaller in diameter in comparison with the track 16. Machined in this offset portion 17 is an annular groove 18 in which a ring 20 provided with an external thread 19 is inserted. Screwed onto this ring 20 is a flutted nut 22 which is provided with an internal thread 21 and which presses the loose guide shoulder 23 against the end faces of the taper rollers 24. As a result, not only are the taper rollers 24 guided axially but also the bearing clearance in the taper roller bearing can be adjusted.
