Abstract

Turnstiles.-A turnstile or pivoted gate is adapted to be raised or lowered bodily without collapsing to provide an unobstructed passage for passengers through the opening normally controlled by the turnstile. In the particular construction described, a pair of turnstile arms 18 are slidably mounted on tubular pillars 11, a barrier 25 normally closing the passage between the pillars. In an emergency, or when desired, the barrier and turnstiles may be together lifted or lowered bodily to provide free passages between and at the sides of the pillars. The turnstile arms 18 are bolted to a flange 17, Fig. 4, of a sleeve 16 surrounding the pillar, an upper flange of the sleeve being formed with ratchet teeth. The barrier frame 24 carries a plate embracing the sleeve below the ratchet flange and is formed with an annular shroud 27 for covering the ratchet teeth. A spring pawl 29 is carried by the barrier frame. The barrier and turnstile arms are suspended by a central cord &c. 40 passing round pulleys 34, 36 in a top frame 14 and connected to a counterweight 38 in one of the pillars. A similar weight 44 in the other pillar is connected by a cord &c. 45 to some other apparatus to be operated simultaneously with the barrier. The weights are normally maintained raised by catches 41, 48 connected together by a rod 49 and released simultaneously by a pull cord 42. This pull cord may be actuated by a temperature alarm device or otherwise.
