Description
SPECIFICATION
Hand-held Fire Extinguisher
The invention relates to a hand-held fire extinguisher including an extinguishing agent container consisting of several parts which are welded together.
Containers of this kind serve to receive extinguishing agents which are poured in a powders, aqueous media or gases, or as a mixture thereof. The extinguishing agents can be permanently under pressure or can be expelled by means of a pressure gas cartridge. Depending upon the intended purpose, the extinguishing agent containers are designed and manufactured in various sizes. In many cases, the extinguishing agent containers are provided with a central opening in the upper portion, into which opening a threaded ring is welded, serving to receive a screw valve. Other fastening methods for valves or pressure gas cartridges can also be used.
The usual manufacture of such extinguishing agent containers consist of rolling a cylinder from a metal sheet and of welding it together at the junction point by means of a longitudinal seam. On both sides, the cylinder is provided with a bead. Set underneath this cylinder there is a base and set upon the cylinder there is an upper portion, these being connected to the cylinder by means of circumferential weld seams. This method of production is very expensive. For the purpose of producing the bases and upper portions, separate metal sheet cutting and pressing arrangements are required and for the cylinder a rolling device is required. Also, two different welding machines must be used, one for the longitudinal seam of the cylinder and one for the two circumferential seams for welding of base and upper portions to the cylinder.In many cases, the base and the upper portion are not welded uniformly, but are welded separately from each other. Not only the machines themselves, but also the many individual operations required in use, are expensive. Moreover, the individual operations can only be automated with difficulty. A further disadvantage is the fact that the base and the upper portion are produced from metal sheets of different thickness.
In addition to the three-part container described above, two-part containers are also known, these containers consisting of two drawn container portions connected together by means of a circumferential seam. Thus two cylinder halves of equal length are drawn over two-stage presses, joined together in the middle and welded. There are also known containers consisting of a drawn or stretched cylindrical portion with a base welded onto it. In this case, a drawn cylinder is produced from a stamped plate bar with sufficient diameter, by the use of a three-stage press and with intermediate annealing. In a further known method, a preform is drawn over a two-stage press and is stretch-rolled over a drawing-stretching-machine to the desired cylinder length. As a rule, it necessary to use intermediate annealing in the case of this production method as well.
In the case of these production methods, the cylinders are provided with a base.
Even in the case of the last-mentioned production method, the extensive use of sheet metal is necessary and the sequence of operations takes place in several stations. Accordingly, there is extra use of the machines and the method takes a long time.
The object of the present invention is to provide an extinguishing agent container the costs of manufacture of which are substantially lowered compared with the previous methods of manufacture, which container is such that it can be manufactured automatically.
According to the present invention, there is provided a fire extinguisher comprising an extinguishing agent container having an opening and comprising two half-cylinders which are welded together along a seam extending longitudinally around the container.
An extinguishing agent container of this kind requires, for its production, less than half of the previous machinery. The work required, and thus the labour costs, can be lowered to or by as much as 70% compared with the previous costs.
Most operations for producing an extinguishing agent container of this type can be carried out by robots. Accordingly, the time required for manufacturing each extinguishing agent container can be substantially reduced.
The half-cylinders, which can be similarly produced and have equal thicknesses, can be joined together in two different ways. Firstly, the plane surfaces of the half-cylinders can be machined so that they abut against one another in an exactly plane manner. In this way, the half-cylinders can be butt-welded to one another. Secondly, the halfcylinders can each be provided, in the region of the longitudinal weld seam, with a beaded edge, these edges being melted off during the welding process so as to form an almost smooth surface.
Accordingly, gaps liable to corrosion in the interior of the container are avoided.
The particular advantage of the extinguishing agent container according to the invention is the fact that only one container part, and hence only one pressing device with one pressing tool, is required.
Moreover, the weld seam, formed according to the invention by just one device, is shorter and less costly compared with the previously-used weld seams. Even the use of sheet metal is less in the case of the present invention, since the sheet metal waste can be reduced to a minimum.
The extinguishing agent container also has an improved appearance, because circumferential seams are lacking and hence a smooth front surface is obtained, this being particularly suitable for the labelling ofthe container.
A known extinguishing agent container and an exemplary embodiment of the extinguishing agent container of the present invention are represented in the drawing are described in greater detail in the following. In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a conventional extinguishing agent container;
Figure 2 shows a side view of an extinguishing agent container according to the present invention;
Figure 3 shows a front view of an extinguishing agent container according to the invention;
Figure 4 shows a half-cylinder in section;
Figure 5 shows a partial view of the half-cylinder in the direction of arrow A;
Figure 6 shows the ends of the half-cylinders, having beaded edges which are adjacent to one another;
Figure 7 shows the ends of the half-cylinders, having an all-round weld seam.
Figure 1 shows a conventional extinguishing agent container 1 which consists of a base 2, an upper part 3 and a cylindrical part 4. The cylindrical part4 is roller from a sheet-metal strip and welded along a weld 6. The upper part 3 is mounted on the cylindrical part and connected to the cylindrical part 4 along a weld 7. Formed in the upper part 3, there is an opening 10 into which a ring 5 is set and is connected to the upper part along a weld 9. The ring 5 can be a threaded ring or other kind of component into which a valve or the like is set. Set underneath the cylindrical part there is a base 2 which is connected to the cylindrical part along a weld 8. The parts 2 to 3 must be produced individually and then connected with each other individually and welded.
Figures 2 to 7 show an extinguishing agent container 11 according to the invention, consisting of two simiiar half-cylinders 12 and 13. Formed in each half-cylinder, during manufacture, is a half opening 1 4a and 14b which together form the opening 14 of the extinguishing agent container 11.
Set into this opening 14, there is a ring 15 which is connected to the container 11 by means of a weld 18. The two half-cylinders 12 and 13 are connected to each other by means of an all-round weld seam 17. This connection can be effected such that the plane surface 20 of the two cylinders 12 and 13 are machined so that the two half-cylinders can be laid one against the other in a plane manner. In this way, a butt weld seam 17 is obtained.
The second alternative possibility of connection is represented in Figures 4 to 7. According to this embodiment, the two half-cylinders 12 and 13 each have a beaded edge 19. The two half-cylinders 12 and 13 can now be laid one against the other without machining of the plane surfaces 20. During the welding process the two beaded edges 19 represented in Figure 6 are melted off so that the weld seam 17 forms a smooth surface as represented in Figure 7. The two half-cylinders 12 and 13 are manufactured so that there is formed in the base part a circular plane surface 21 on which a support 16 in the form of a foot can be fitted. The support 16 can be manufactured from sheet metal or from a plastics material. For example, a support made of polyurethane foam can be fixed to the extinguishing agent container.
The extinguishing agent container according to the invention also offers a technical advantage as compared to the previous extinguishing agent containers. Thus, if an excess pressure forms in the case of the previous three-part containers, merely the central part, namely the cylinder, expands, i.e. a bulge develops between the two all-around weld seams. On account of this expansion, the cylinder cracks alongside the longitudinal weld seam. If an excess pressure forms in the case of the extinguishing agent container according to the invention, the whole container extends from the upper part to the base. Even the weld seam extends as well. The extension is essentially greater in the case of this embodiment and the fracture will form in the entire metal sheet furthest from the circumferential weld seam.
The necessary openings, mounting supports and the like in or on the extinguishing agent container 11 are not shown in the drawings. They can be fitted or introduced during the production of the halfcylinders 12 and 13 or after the welding of the latter to form the extinguishing agent container.
