Abstract

In a container having a handle attached thereto, the edge of a wall portion 3 of the container 1 is pleated several times in the circumferential direction of the container 1 to form reinforcing portions 9, 10, and each of the resultant pleated reinforcing portions 9, 10, is stitched to the respective end of a handle 8. The pleating may take the form of folded or box pleats. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Container The present invention relates to containers, and in particular to a handle structure suitable for use in a container, particularly, in a flexible container.
In known flexible containers, it is general practice to sew reinforcing bands around the periphery of a wall portion of the container in a plurality of stages, and then sew handles onto these reinforced portions.
The known handle structures, however, require a large area of stitching, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the handle mounting.
Known handles also increase the weight and the production cost of the container. A further disadvantage is that the presence of the reinforcing bands sewed onto the periphery of the wall portions of the container makes it difficult to fold the container.
According to the present invention there is provided a container having a handle structure attached thereto, wherein wall portions of the container are pleated several times in the circumferential direction thereof to form reinforcing portions, and a respective end of a handle structure is attached by stitching to each of the pleated reinforcing portions.
With the above-described arrangement, the area of the stitching can be reduced relative to prior art proposals. Reinforcing is provided by using portions of the container wall itself, so that the handles can be firmly mounted.
There is no need to mount reinforcing portions on the wall of the container, and this allows the container to be folded flat easily.
The resultant containers are lighter than known similar containers and can be made more cheaply.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described more fully, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of a container according to the present invention; Figures 2A to 2C are partial perspective views of the container of Fig. 1, showing various stages of attaching the handle to the container; Figure 3 is a partial exploded view of the arrangement of the wall portion of a second embodiment of a container in accordance with the present invention; and Figures 4A to 4C are perspective views of the container of Fig. 3, showing the various stages of attaching the handle to the container.
A first embodiment will be described first with reference to Figs. 1 to 2. As shown in Fig. 1, a container 1 comprises a wall portion 3 woven into a cylindrical configuration from a flat yarn of a synthetic resin such as polypropylene, and a charging port 4 and a discharging port 5 attached by sewing to the upper and lower edges of the wall portion 3, respectively, the charging port 4 and the discharging port 5 being made from synthetic resin sheet. Closing strips 6 and 7 are attached to the charging port 4 and the discharging port 5, respectively, typically by sewing. The ends of a pair of handles 8 are sewed on the upper edges of corners of the wall portion 3.
The manner of the attaching of these handles 8 is described below. As shown in Fig. 2A, the upper edge of each corner of the wall portion 3 is pleated together to form triangular reinforcing portions 9, 10. The reinforcing portions 9, 10 are machine-sewed together along their hypotenuses by a machine thread 11. Each of the reinforcing portions 9, 10 is then folded outward down its bisector, as shown in Fig. 2B, so that each of the reinforcing portions 9, 10 is doubled, and the doubled reinforcing portions 9, 10 are then laid on reinforcing portions 12, 13, respectively, which are formed contiguous to the reinforcing portions 9, 10 in the circumferential direction thereby to form a box-type pleat. An end of a handle 8 is laid on the outer surfaces of the reinforcing portions 9, 10, as shown in Fig. 2C, and the handle 8 and each of the reinforcing portions 9, 10, 12 and 13 are sewn together with a thread 22.
As described above, since each end of the handles 8 is sewn to a reinforcing portion 9, 10, 12 and 13 formed by pleating the edge of the wall portion 3 in the circumferential direction, the area of stitching can be reduced. Reinforcing is provided by using the wall portion itself, so that the handles 8 can be firmly mounted. It is not necessary to provide reinforcing portions at an intermediate portion of the wall portion 3, and this enables the container to be folded flat easily.
A second embodiment of the present invention is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In this embodiment the reinforcing portions are formed by folding the wall portion of the container to form folded pleats. As shown in Fig. 3, a triangular reinforcing portion 15 is formed at the upper edge of each corner of the wall portion 3, with a centre line 14 serving as a bisector. Reinforcing portions 18, 19, which have the same subtended angle as the reinforcing portion 15, are formed on either side of the reinforcing portion 15 in the circumferential direction of the wall portion 3, with the oblique lines of the reinforcing portion 15 acting as fold lines 16, 17. As shown in Fig. 4A, the fold line 16 is folded outward, while the fold line 17 is folded inward. The reinforcing portions 15 and 18 are thereby pleated together, and are stitched together along the fold line 17 by a thread 20.The reinforcing portions 15 and 18 are together laid on the reinforcing portion 19, as shown in Fig. 4B, and the reinforcing portions 15 and 18 are stitched together onto the reinforcing portion 19 along the fold line 16 by a thread 21. An end of a handle 8 is laid onto the reinforcing portion 18, and the handle 8 is stitched onto the reinforcing portions 18, 15 and 19 by a thread 22.
The remaining structure and functions of this embodiment are the same as described for the first embodiment.
As will be understood from the foregoing description, according to the present invention, the upper edge of the wall portion of the container is pleated several times to form reinforcing portions, and each of these reinforcing portions is stitched together with the end of a handle. Consequently, the area of the stitching can be reduced, and the handles can be mounted firmly to the container increasing the efficiency of the handle mounting. Since reinforcing is provided by using the wall portion itself, it is possible to reduce the weight and the production cost of the container. In addition, there is no need to provide a reinforcing portion at an intermediate portion, and the container can therefore be folded flat easily.
