Description
SPECIFICATION
Device for breaking material
The present invention relates to apparatus for breaking material, and in particularfor breaking concrete.
It is often required to remove concrete elements from houses and other buildings and structures in order to effect structural repairs. Such concrete elements may be present in the form of concrete columns, and these are conventionally removed manually by hammer and chisel or other appropriate manual methods.
Such manual methods are labour intensive and time consuming, and in some cases the concrete to be removed is located in inaccessable places such as would renderthe conventional manual method difficult or even impossible. Also, conventional methods present problems duetovibration and dust.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for breaking concrete or other hard material, the device comprising a body including a first portion having mounted thereon a breaking tool and a second portion rigidly connected to and spaced from said first portion, the breaking tool being mounted for movement in a direction from said first to said second portion, and meansforeffecting said movement so as to apply a breaking force to material located between saidfirstand second portions.
Thus, in operation, a piece of concrete or other material located between the first and second portions of the device is first of all trapped between the breaking tool and the second portion, and then it is broken as a result of a breaking force being applied through the breaking tool, whilstthe material is held rigidly by the body of the device.
The body may be a generally U-shaped element having first and second portions rigidly connected together and incorporating a bight portion therebetween.
Preferably the device includes resilient means to bias the breaking tool into a retracted position after use, so that material may be located between the first and second portions.
Preferably said resilient means comprises a compression spring located within the first portion of the body, around the breaking tool.
Preferably the means to effect movement of the breaking tool comprises an hydraulicallyoperated cylinder and ram.
Preferably the breaking tool comprises a shaft having a chisel shaped head.
The device may have just one chisel shaped breaking tool, and in this casethesecond portion of the body has a flat bearing surface to support the back of the material.
Alternatively, the device may include two chisel shaped members, one being the breaking tool mounted for movement as described above, and the other being rigidly fixed to the second portion of the body to provide a sharp edge which, in-use, engages the back ofthe material to be broken.
In this case, both the chisel shaped members are preferablyableto be fixed in the body in a number of different orientations. This alternative arrangement is particularly useful in cases where the material to be broken is in inaccessabie places.
Thus, with the device of the present invention, the breaking tool is normally retracted so that it protrudes only a short distance into the bight portion. The material to be broken is inserted within the bight portion, and the means to effect movement of the breaking tool is actuated to move the breaking tool across the bight portion towards the second portion, the chisel shaped head of the breaking tool engages the material to be broken, the means to effect movement ofthe breaking tool then applies an intense iocalised force through the breaking tool, and the material is broken cleanly without vibration or dust.
In the case where the device includes two chisel shaped members, these may be adapted to extend upwardly from the body, their long axes defining the sides of the triangle. The mode of operation is the same as described above, but in this case the localised pressure is much more intense and the orientation ofthechisel shaped members means that otherwise inaccessable material may be broken.
The body may comprise a single member, but pre ferably comprises two plate like members, one located on each side of the breaking tool. This achieves a reduction in weight whilst giving the necessary rigidity.
Embodiments ofthe present invention will nowbe described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure lisa partially cut away side view of a first embodiment of the present invention;
Figure2 is a top plan view of the embodiment shown in Figure 1; and,
Figure 3 is a side view of a second embodiment of the-present invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, apparatus 1 according to the present invention comprises a body in the form of a frame having two plate like members 2, 3.
These have ends 2a, 2b and 3a, 3b respectively with a bight portion 4 defined between each of the ends 2a, 2b and 3a, 3b. The bight portion 4 allows a piece of material, particularly concrete, to be inserted within the frame.
A block 5 is located between the two ends 2b and 3b ofthe plate like members, the block 5 presenting a bearing surface 5a for supporting the back of a piece of material previously inserted into the bight portion 4. At the opposite end of the frame, a breaking tool 6 is located within the two ends 2a, 3a, and comprises a shaft 6b and a chisel shaped head 6a. The breaking tool 6 is arranged for sliding movement across the bight portion 4through guiding members 7, 8fixed between the two plates 2, 3. The shaft 6b is connected to a hydraulic ram 9 by means of a connecting block 10. The connecting block 10 passes around the end of the shaft 6b and underneath it, and has a down wardlyextending portion 10a having aflatsurface 11 for engagement with the ram 9.Between the guiding members 7 and 8 and the connecting block 1 Othere extends longitudinally a compression spring 6c which serves to bias the breaking tool 6 back into its retracted position when the ram 9 is released.
In use, a piece of concrete is placed in the bight portion 4. Hydraulic fluid is then supplied to the ram 9 in the direction ofthe arrow B. This causes the connecting block 10 and thusthe breaking tool 6to move across the bight portion 4to engage the concrete.
Once the concrete is trapped between the surface 5a and the head 6a, the supply of hydraulic fluid to the ram 9 is continued, and this provides a breaking force which causes the concrete to fracture.
Referring to Figure 3, in an alternative embodiment the same two plate like members 10 accommodate a fixed chisel 11 which is pivotally mounted on the end 1 0a so as to assume a variety of different orientations, and a breaking tool 12 such as that shown in Figures 1 and 2. In this case, the mounting ofthe breaking tool 12 within the frames 10is adjustable between a number of predetermined positions 13, 14. This embodiment is particularly useful forbreak- ing concrete which is located in inaccessable places.
