Abstract

218,088. McAuslan, W., (Kerr, TV.). June 15, 1923. Density separators.-A steam separator has a cylindrical chamber into which the wet steam passes by a tangential inlet K and has a spiral passage from which the dry steam escapes by a number of openings R to a central cylinder E and outlet M. The cross-sectional area of the passage is gradually reduced to keep the velocity of the steam practically constant; this may be accomplished by reducing the height of the passage as shown in Fig. 1, or the width, or both. The partition P of the passage is inclined downwards from the inner cylinder E to assist the separating action and the water is discharged from the outlet L. When the separator is used within a boiler the dry-steam outlet M is connected to the stop valve spigot S, Fig. 4, and the pipe H from the water outlet L has a non-return valve J through which the water passes back into the boiler.
