Abstract

A sliding gate valve for controlling the flow of molten metal includes a refractory sliding plate mounted on a movable frame and cooperating with a fixed base plate. The sliding plate is of zirconium oxide or alumina and affords an opening which accommodates a wear insert of magnesite defining a flow opening in communication with a flow opening defined by a replaceable refractory outlet sleeve. The outlet sleeve, which is preferably also of magnesite, is removably connected by a mounting to move with the sliding plate. The wear insert is connected to the associated replaceable outlet to constitute a wear part unit thereby permitting removal of the wear insert from the sliding plate without disassembly of the valve. The valve is similar to that disclosed in GB-2,164,592A.

Description

SPECIFICATION Sliding Gate Valves The present invention relates to sliding gate valves for controlling the flow of molten metal and is concerned with such valves of the type which is disclosed in British Patent Specification No.
21 64592A of the present applicants. This prior specification discloses a sliding gate valve for controlling the flow of molten metal including a refractory sliding plate mounted in a frame, which is movable linearly, rotatably, or pivotably, and affording an opening which accommodates a wear insert, the wear insert defining a flow opening in communication with a flow opening defined by a refractory replaceable outlet which is removably connected by a mounting to move with the sliding plate. The invention disclosed and claimed in the prior specification is that the wear insert in the refractory sliding plate is associated with the refractory replaceable outlet and is thus replaceable with it. Further details may be obtained from British Patent Specification No. 2164592A, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
It is an object of the present invention to match the refractory material of the wear insert and optionally of the replaceable outlet also to that of the sliding plate to increase the service lives thereof.
In accordance with the present invention the sliding plate of a sliding gate valve of the type referred to above comprises zirconium oxide (ZrO2) or alumina (awl203) and the wear insert comprises magnesite (MgO). Plates of zirconium oxide or alumina tend to wear prematurely in the vicinity of the flow opening by reason of the relatively rapid increase in size due to erosion of the flow opening with respect to the rate of wear of the sliding surface and the use of a magnesite refractory insert is found to lead to balanced wear and thus to optimal usage of the plate material.
The prior specification refers to the fact that the refractory wear insert and the refractory replaceable outlet can comprise the same materials or different materials depending on the pouring programme and the type of steel which is to be poured. It is further preferred in accordance with the present invention that the refractory replaceable outlet is manufactured entirely from magnesite and that it be disposed in relation to the sliding plate parallel to the sliding surface thereof.
1. A sliding gate valve for controlling the flow of molten metal including a refractory sliding plate mounted in a movable frame and affording an opening which accommodates a wear insert, the wear insert defining a flow opening in communication with a flow opening defined by a refractory replaceable outlet which is removably connected by a mounting to move with the sliding plate, the wear insert being associated with the replaceable outlet, the sliding plate comprising zirconium oxide or alumina and the wear insert comprising magnesite.
2. Avalve as claimed in claim 1, in which the replaceable outlet comprises magnesite.
