Abstract

216,637. Cammell, Laird, & Co., Ltd., Allan. J. M., Loving, H. C., and Miley, P. April 13, 1923. Lifting-dogs of the kind in which the pivoted dog 3 is deflected by contact with the load 1 and then returned by gravity or a spring to engage the load, are provided with means for deflecting the dog a second time and to a greater extent by lowering it with respect to the load. A catch is provided lor holding the dog in the deflected position until it is lifted clear of the load. The dog 3, Fig. 1, is pivoted at 4 and has a load-engaging shoulder 8. The second deflection is caused by the engagement of the surface 9 with the projection 2 on the load, and the dog is retained in the new position by the engagement of the shoulder 15 of the catch 10, Fig. 3, with a pin 12 which passes through a curved slot 13 in the bracket 5 concentric with the pivot 4. The catch 10 is pivoted at 11 and carries a roller 17 which disengages it when the dog is raised. The catch may be held inoperative or pressed towards the pin 12 by a spring-controlled plunger 18 bearing on shaped faces of the fixed pivot 11, Fig. 1. In a modification for lifting objects not having a projection 2, the pivot 4, Fig. 6, is at the lower end of the dog and the load is engaged by a curved surface 8. In both forms two dogs with their jaws faced outwards are adjustably mounted on a bar 6 connected to lifting tackle. When the dogs are used for lifting and centreing tyres, &c. each dog is adjustably mounted on one of a series of bars 6, Fig. 8, radiating from a common central boss 21 which may be hollowed to engage a fixed centreing pin 22 on the machine.
