Abstract

An end fitting for a resilient pipe, e.g. a plastics hose, has a deformable pressure ring 3 pre- assembled to the body 1 of the fitting and a tension ring located in a groove of the pressure ring. The end of a resilient pipe may be quickly clamped into the fitting by circumferential tightening of the tension ring to effect a radially inwardly directed pressure through the pressure ring 3 to clamp the pipe between the ring 3 and a tubular cylindrical projection 6 of the fitting. The pressure ring 3 is preferably attached to the body 1 by means of a deformable end flange having a shoulder 2 engaging in a co-operating recess. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION End fitting for a resilient pipe This invention relates to an end fitting for a resilient pipe, e.g. a plastics hose, wherein the fitting comprises a body of tubular form having an outer end for connection to a cooperating fluid delivery or receiving member and an inner end comprising a tubular cylindrical projection engagable within the end of the resilient pipe, a deformable pressure ring engagable with the exterior of the pipe around the said cylindrical projection and a clamping element located around the pressure ring for applying radially inwardly directed pressure to the pressure ring, and hence to the pipe, to clamp the pipe between the pressure ring and the cylindrical projection. End fittings of this type are hereinafter referred to as being of the kind specified.
End fittings of the kind specified are disclosed for example in French Patent Specification 1177068 and British Patent Specification 967490 but in both of these specifications the radially inwardly directed pressure is taught as being applied to a detachable pressure ring by means of a detachable screw threaded element engagable with the body of the fitting whereby, upon tightening of the screw threaded element onto the body of the fitting, the said radial pressure is applied to clamp the pipe.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an end fitting of the kind specified wherein the pressure ring and the clamping element are pre-assembled to the body of the fitting whereby the fitting may be quickly and efficiently utilised for clamping an end of a resilient pipe thereto.
In accordance with the invention there is provided an end fitting of the kind specified wherein the pressure ring is attached to the body of the fitting and the clamping element comprises a tension ring located in a groove on the exterior surface of the pressure ring whereby, when the end of a resilient pipe is received between the cylindrical projection and the pressure ring, radially inwardly directed clamping pressg located in a groove on the exterior surface of the pressure ring whereby, when the end of a resilient pipe is received between the cylindrical projection and the pressure ring, radially inwardly directed clamping pressure may be applied to the pressure ring by circumferential tensioning of the tension ring about the pressure ring.
Conveniently the pressure ring is attached to the body of the fitting by means of a deformable annular end flange of the pressure riaxis of the pressure ring, the tension ring being tensionable at a position coincident with that part of the pressure ring having maximum eccentricity to apply a radially inwardly directed pressure to the pressure ring.
Preferably means are provided on the exterior surface of the pressure ring within said groove for preventing circumferential movement of the tension ring about the pressure ring.
Other features of the invention will become apparent from the following description which is given herein solely by way of example with reference to the accompaying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal crosssection through an end fitting constructed in accordance with the invention showing the end of a resilient pipe clamped to the end fitting; Figure 2 is a transverse cross-sectional view of the fitting and pipe of Fig. 1 taken in the direction of the arrows; and Figure 3 is a partial longitudinal crosssection of an end fitting constructed in accordance with the invention without the pipe clamped thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the end fitting comprises a generally tubular body formed of metal having an outer end with an exterior screw threaded formation for attachment to a cooperating fluid delivery or receiving device.
The inner end of the body comprises an integral cylindrical projection 6 engagable, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, within the end of a resilient pipe 5. The pipe 5, in practice, will usually be a resilient plastics hose such as may be used in an hydraulic fitting.
Around the cylindrical projection 6 there is located a deformable pressure ring 3 conveniently formed of a plastics material and having a continuous circumferentially extending groove 4 formed in its radially outer surface for receiving a clamping element in the form of a tension ring 8 as will be further described.
The inner end of the pressure ring 3 is provided with a deformable annular end flange extending axially of the pressure ring and having a radially inwardly directed annular shoulder 2 whereby the pressure ring may be pre-assembled to the body 1 of the fitting by a "snap-in" attachment of the shoulder 2 within a cooperating recess of the body of the fitting.
As will be clearly seen from Fig. 2 of the drawings, the thickness of the pressure ring within the groove 4 is non-uniform whereby the radially outer surface of the groove 4 is eccentric relative to the central longitudinally extending axis of the ring 3. At its part of maximum eccentricity, the pressure ring 3 is provided with an axially extending rib 11 within the groove 4.
The tension ring 8 comprises a metal band of generally circular form but having a Ushaped tensioning portion 7 which, when assembled on the pressure ring 3, is coincident with that part of the pressure ring having maximum eccentricity. The tensioning portion 7 comprises an integral part of the tension ring 8 providing a part of the ring which is deformable circumferentially thereof by an appropriate tightening tool to tension the ring 8 about the pressure ring 3 and hence apply a radially inwardly directed pressure to the pressure ring 3 and hence to the end of the pipe 5 located between the ring 3 and the cylindrical projection 6. The aforesaid rib 11 within the groove 4 prevents inadvertent circumferential displacement of the tension ring 8 about the pressure ring 3.
The eccentricity of the radially outer surface (i.e. the base) of the groove 4 ensures that, when the tension ring 8 is tightened by portion 7 at the part of maximum eccentricity, a uniform radially inwardly directed pressure is transmitted to the ring 3 to clamp the pipe 5.
A set of cooperating ribs 9 and 10 are formed respectively on the radially outer surface of the projection 6 and the radially inner surface of the pressure ring 3 for assisting in gripping the end of the pipe 5.
An end fitting constructed in accordance with the invention, as supplied to the user, is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings wherein all of the parts thereof are pre-assembled one to another. Thus, in the pre-assembled condition, the pressure ring 3 has been "snap-fitted" to the body 1 and the tension ring 8 has been pre-located within the groove 4 of the pressure ring. In use, all that is required is for the end of the resilient pipe to be pushed into the annular space defined between the radially outer surface of the projection 6 and the radially inner surface of the pressure ring 3 followed by an appropriate degree of tensioning of the tension ring 8 to clamp the pipe in position.
