Abstract

To prevent hairing or illegible word of the threads of artificial silk &c. produced by the evaporative method, a lubricating-dressing is applied to the threads during their travel to the winding-device or subsequently to their production. The dressing may consist of olive oil, olive oil and oleic acid, castor oil, a heavy paraffin oil, or lard either alone or mixed with oleic acid; and the dressing may be used either in the solid state, or melted, or in the form of an emulsion, and it may be applied by means of a roller or pad, or the threads may be passed through or dipped into a bath of the dressing, or the latter may be sprayed on to the material. The dressing may be finally removed by a suitable scouring treatment. In examples the following dressings are employed:-equal parts of lard and pale oleic acid; olive oil; medicinal paraffin oil; an emulsion consisting of olive oil, oleic acid, caustic potash solution mixed with boiling water and which before use is diluted with water and is used in its alkaline condition or after acidification with, for example, formic and tartaric acids; an emulsion of potash soft soap, warm water, olive oil and oleic acid, and subsequently diluted with water. Specification 198,023 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 182,830, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for].ALSO:Lubricants for fibres of artificial silk &c. consists of equal parts of lard and pale oleic acid; olive oil; medicinal paraffin oil; an emulsion of olive oil, oleic acid, and caustic potash solution mixed with boiling water, and which before use is diluted with water and is used in its alkaline condition or after acidification with, for example, formic and tartaric acids; or an emulsion of potash soft soap, warm water, olive oil, and oleic acid, subsequently diluted with water. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 182,830, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, acid, subsequently diluted with water.
