Abstract

215,310. General Electric Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Patent-Treuhand-Ges f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen). May 5, 1923, [Convention date]. Arc lamps; electrodes.-In an enclosed lamp with tungsten electrodes the electrodes are in contact, when the lamp is not in use, at points other than those at which the the working arc forms, the contact therefore being independent of any change in the form of the electrodes during running. In the apparatus shown a hemispherical anode h normally rests against a hemispherical tungsten body m, fixed over a coating g<1> of thorium oxide on the cathode g. When current passes the anode is moved in the direction of the arrow by a bimetallic strip, not shown, forming part of the electrode support, the arc then taking place between the nearest points of the anode and cathode. In a modification the cathode is bent, contact of the anode taking place with one limb and arising with the other. In another modification, the cathode is straight and the bimetallic strip is arranged to move the anode obliquely when the arc is struck and to rotate it simultaneously.
