Abstract

A slider is moulded in two plastics portions 1 and 2 which snap fit together to permit pivotting about axis A-A, a pair of resiliently deformed blades 7 continuously urging rows of teeth 8 into clamping engagement with binder lengths L1 and L2 at selected positions therealong. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Sliders The present invention relates to sliders of the type for maintaining lengths of binder close to one another.
The binder lengths could be different sections of the same binder or could be sections of different binders. There would normally be two binder lengths but other numbers of binder length could be possible. The binder lengths would normally be formed of for example string, cord or tape. The binder lengths could however be formed of different materials. In a particular application, the binder lengths would be the free end sections of a single cord extending around the mouth of a pull-tight cloth bag. The slider could be used to hold the bag shut without the need for tying the end sections of the cord in a knot. Many other applications could of course be possible.
A slider according to the present invention, of the type for maintaining lengths of binder close to one another, comprises a pair of slider portions hinged together and resilient means arranged such that, in use, the slider portions clamp the binder lengths at selected positions therealong under the action of the resilient means.
One of the slider portions may be formed with first hinge means which is a snap fit with second hinge means formed on the other of the slider portions. The first and second hinge means may include in combination a pair of projections with lead-in ramps and a pair of bearings with lead-in ramps. At least one of the slider portions may be formed with jaw means for assisting in clamping the binder lengths. The jaw means may include at least one row of sloping teeth. At least one of the slider portions may be formed with separating means for assisting in separating the binder lengths. One of the slider portions may be formed as a base with the other of the slider portions being formed as a wrap-over cover.
The resilient means may be formed with only the base.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, which consists of two separate plastics mouldings, the resilient means is formed with either or each of the slider portions but does not permanently interconnect both of the slider portions.
A slider, according to the present invention, will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a lateral elevational view of the slider; Figure 2 is a top view of the slider; Figure 3 is a view on a larger scale of the inside of the cover; Figure 4 is a lateral elevational view of the cover on the same scale as Fig. 3; Figure 5 is a view of the inside of the base also on the same scale; Figure 6 is a lateral elevational view of the base on the same scale as Fig. 5; Figure 7 is a schematic view of the slider on yet another scale indicating the clamping of two binder lengths; and Figure 8 is a view of the underside of Fig.
7.
In the accompanying drawings, a slider according to the present invention consists of a base 1 and a cover 2 which partially envelops or wraps over the base 1 to form a hollow enclosure.
The base 1 includes lead-in ramps 3 and the cover 2 includes lead-in ramps 4; the ramps 4 being associated with a pair of circular, inwardly facing studs 5 and the ramps 3 being associated with a pair of semicircular ended, outwardly facing recesses 6; and the studs 5 being a snap fit within the recesses 6.
This arrangement permits the base 1 and the cover 2 to rotate relatively to one another about a pivotting axis A-A in the manner of a hinge with projections constituted by the studs 5 being rotatable within bearings constituted by the recesses 6.
The slider is continuously urged to its clamping position by a pair of resiliently deformed blades 7 which for ease of manufacture have the appearance of being struck out of the floor of the base 1 although in fact they are moulded to the shape shown in Fig. 6 and the openings in the floor of the base 1 are a result of the mould configuration.
The base 1 includes a single row of sloping teeth 8 forming jaw means and the cover 2 includes two rows of sloping teeth 8 forming jaw means. The base 1 further includes a single plate 9 forming separating means disposed centrally near an opening 10 made between the base 1 and the cover 2 at one end of the slider. The cover 2 further includes a single plate 9 forming separating means disposed centrally near the opening 10. In use, a first binder length L1 lies to one side of the plates 9 and a second binder length L2 lies to the other side of the plates 9. The plates 9 are located adjacent to one another in the central longitudinal plane of the slider and do not interfere with one another during pivotting of the slider.
It will be understood that the action of the resiliently deformed blades 7 causes the rows of teeth 8 to clamp the binder lengths L1 and L2 at an opening 11 made between the base 1 and the cover 2 at the far end of the slider from the opening 1 0. Squeezing the slider manually in the directions of the arrows F1 releases the rows of teeth 8 from the binder lengths L1 and L2 which are then free to be moved in either of their longitudinal directions relatively to the slider. Due to the inclinations of the rows of teeth 8, it is extremely difficult if not impossible to move the binder lengths L1 and L2 in the direction of the arrow F2, when the slider is not being squeezed. However, in the same situation the binder lengths L1 and L2 can be moved comparatively easily in the direction of the arrow F3. This latter movement would preferably correspond to tightening of the binder lengths L1 and L2.
