Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle with roll-off and/or tipping apparatus The invention relates to a vehicle including apparatus for effecting roll-off and/or tipping of a cargo item.
A vehicle of this kind is known, wherein containers of the same size as the vehicle construction are pullable along the ground and can be loaded, tipped over and unloaded. It has also already been proposed that a vehicle of this kind be modified by means of an additional apparatus so that it can load a silo container mounted on a frame by moving it from its vertical upright position and can then set it upright again.
According to the invention, there is provided a vehicle including apparatus for effecting roll off and/or tipping of a cargo item, said apparatus comprising a tipper arm pivotally mounted to the vehicle in the tail region thereof so as to be fixably pivotable in the central vertical longitudinal plane of the vehicle, a carriage fixably movable along the tipper arm, and a hook arm adapted to hold at least one handle of a said cargo item, the hook arm being pivotally mounted to the carriage so as to be movable therewith and to be pivotable and fixable in said central vertical longitudinal plane.
The vehicle according to the invention with rolloff and/or tipping apparatus can, without the need for any additional equipment, load, tip up and unload any containers which can be pulled along the ground, as required. In addition such apparatus can load silo containers mounted on a frame by moving them from their vertical position and can then set them upright again, i.e. in general terms it can load, tip up and unload any cargo items having linear dimensions corresponding to the vehicle construction from the horizontal position and also load them from the vertical position and set them upright again.
For loading and unloading cargo items which can be pulled along the ground, the tipper arm remains fixed to the vehicle. For tipping over and for loading and setting upright any vertically positioned cargo item, the tipper arm is operated. Details are given in the following description of an embodiment by way of example.
Preferably the tipper arm in its rest position rests on a base frame fixed to the vehicle.
In order to be able to lift the cargo item from the vertical position before loading, there is preferably mounted on top of the carriage at least one hook which is open at the front in the rest positicn of the tipper arm, for hooking under a handle or bar on the cargo item.
The base frame and the tipper arm may each comprise two longitudinal carriers, and in such a construction the longitudinal carriers of the tipper arm may be located between the longitudinal carriers of the base frame in the rest position. This provides a particularly space-saving construction which is compact in the rest position.
In order to drive the carriage safely at relatively low cost the running rails for the carriage are preferably mounted inwardly of the longitudinal carriers of the tipper arm.
The carriage may be placed particularly far forwards and thus the hook may be particularly high on the carriage in the vertical position of the tipper arm if the hook arm is pivotably mounted about a pivot spindle located at the end of the carriage which is nearest to the tail of the vehicle.
In order to be able to move the cargo item along the tipper arm without difficulty, it is preferable that the tipper arm includes supports for slide rails on the cargo item.
To ensure that the at least one handle does not permanently project from the cargo item, it may be constructed so as to be foldable.
In order to secure the cargo to the tipper arm in the rest position of the tipper arm, there may be provided on the upper side thereof at least one pin, pointing rearwardly in the rest position of the tipper arm, for engaging in an eye on the underside of the cargo item.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of a vehicle in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows the vehicle according to Fig.
1 in plan view; Figure 3 shows the vehicle in different states during loading or unloading and tipping of a container which is pullable along the ground; Figure 4 shows the vehicle in different states during loading or unloading of a silo mounted on a frame which is initially lying on the ground and is then to be put back on the ground; and Figure 5 shows the vehicle in different states during the picking up and setting upright of a silo mounted on a frame.
The vehicle 2 according to the embodiment by way of example comprises a roll-off and/or tipping apparatus 4 provided with a hook arm 6 which is both pivotable and fixable in the central vertical longitudinal plane of the vehicie. This hook arm 6 is provided with a hook 8 for gripping a foldable handle 10 on a cargo item which is to be loaded, tipped up or set upright and unloaded, with linear dimensions corresponding to the vehicle construction. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, this cargo item is a container 12 which can be pulled along the ground, whilst in the embodiment according to Figs. 4 and 5 it is a silo 16 on a frame 18 which can be pulled along the ground by means of a sled 14.
A tipper arm 24 is hinged to the tail 20 of the vehicle, co-axially with support rollers 22, so as to be both pivotable and fixable in the central longitudinal plane of the vehicle, and this tipper arm 24 is supported in its rest position on a base frame 26 fixed to the vehicle and can be raised from the base frame 26 by means of two piston-cylinder assemblies 28 operating in parallel. A carriage 32 is movable and fixable along the tipper arm 24 by means of a piston-cylinder assembly 30, whilst on this carriage 32 the hook arm 6 is pivotable about a pivot spindle 34 located at the end of the carriage 32 which is nearest to the tail of the vehicle, and the hook arm 6 can be raised from the carriage 32 by means of a piston-cylinder assembly 52.On the top of the carriage 32 there are two hooks 36, which are open at the front in the rest position of the tipper arm 24, and which are located side by side for hooking under bars 38 on the cargo item. The base frame 26 and the tipper arm 24 respectively comprise two longitudinal carriers 40, 42 and 44, 46; the longitudinal carriers 44, 46 of the tipper arm 24 in its rest position are located between the longitudinal carriers 40, 42 of the base frame 26. Running rails 48, 50 for the carriage 32 are mounted on the insides of the longitudinal carriers 44, 46 of the tipper arm 24.
Areas on the surface of the longitudinal carriers 44, 46 of the tipper arm 24 serve as supports for slide rails 54 on the underside of the cargo item.
On the top of the tipper arm 24 there is a pin 56 which points rearwardly in the rest position of the tipper arm 24 for engaging in a eye 58 on the underside of the cargo item.
The operations of loading, unloading and tipping up of a cargo item which can be pulled along the ground according to Figs. 3 and 4 are carried out as follows. Before loading, the carriage 32 is driven along to the tail of the vehicle by means of the piston-cylinder assembly 30 and fixed in position.
Then the hook arm 6 is pivoted rearwardly by means of the piston-cylinder assembly 52 until the hook 8 projects beyond the tail of the vehicle and, after the vehicle has been moved back, can engage under the handle 10 on the cargo item. By pivoting the hook arm 6 forwardly the cargo item is raised and lifted, pulled and set down on the vehicle via the rollers 22. Then the piston cylinder assembly 30 is moved into the extended position, with the result that the cargo item is pushed forward and the eye 58 on the underside of the cargo item comes into contact with the pin 56.
The unloading operation is carried out by reversing the above procedure.
If the cargo item is to be tipped up (if for example the container 12 which constitutes the cargo item is to be tipped over to empty it), the tipper arm 24 is raised by means of the piston cylinder assembly 28, as shown in Fig. 3, and lowered again when the container 12 has been emptied.
Figure 5 shows how a silo 16 on a frame 18, loaded as in Fig. 4, can be set upright in the vertical position at the tail of the vehicle and can be reloaded from this vertical position.
To set it upright, the tipper arm 24 is pivoted into the vertical position by means of the piston cylinder assembly 28. Then the piston-cylinder assembly 30 is brought into operation so that the hooks 36 gently set down the silo 16 with its frame 18 and finally release the bars 38. Loading is carried out by reversing the procedure. The sled 14 rests with its slide rails 54 on the rollers 22.
By returning the carriage 32 with the hook arm 6, the hook 8 is brought into position to align with the hitherto free handle 10 and this handle is then placed in the hook 8 by hand. The carriage 32 with the hook arm 6 is then driven into the front end position, so that the eye 58 slides over the pin 56.
