Abstract

A stitch bonded fabric is made with a transverse tear line formed of cuts severing warp threads but leaving the fabric connected across the tear line. Occasional warp threads can be left between cuts. A roll of such fabric can serve as e.g. dusters or cleaning cloths. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Stitch bonded fabric THIS INVENTION relates to stitch bonded fabric.
By its construction, stitch bonded fabric is very inexpensive to produce as compared to knitted or woven fabrics. It is, on that account, and on account of its absorbing and other properties, suitable for use as dusters or cleaning cloths.
We have now found, surprisingly, that stitch bonded fabric can be prepared in roll form from which individual pieces can be readily taken for use as dusters or cleaning cloths or any other purpose.
The invention comprises giving a stitch bonded fabric a transverse tear line formed of cuts severing warp threads but leaving the fabric connected across the tear line.
The tear line may consist of intermittent cuts severing warp threads leaving at least one, but preferably no more than four, warp threads intact between adjacent cuts.
Weights of fabric between 100 and 250 grams per square metre and gauges between 7 and 22 are suitable, and the fabric is preferablyofsingle bar construction as producedforexample by Maliwatt machinery manufactured by VEB Nähwirkmas- chinenbau of Karl-Marx-Stadt in East Germany.
The tear line may be of aligned cuts, preferably 3 to 8 centimetres long.
A roll of such fabric 20 to 50 cmswide with tear lines spaced apart by 20 to 50 cms is very suitable as a supply of dusters or cleaning cloths.
One embodiment ofafabricwhich may be supplied in roll form according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which the single figure is a view of a fabric on a roll.
Thefabric is a single bar stitch bonded fabric of the kind made on a Maliwatt machine as aforesaid, having a weight of 100 to 250 gmslsq.m and a gauge between 7and22.
Tear lines 11 composed of aligned cuts 12 of to 8 cms length separated by uncut widths 13 containing at least one and preferably not more than four warp threads 14 are formed transversely of thefabric spaced apart by 20 - 50 cms.
The fabric may be of viscose rayon fibres stitched with 110 decitex continuous filament polyester stitching yarn, although finer yarn may be used if desired.
It is found, surprisingly, thatsuch a tear line will in fact facilitate a clean tearwithoutthe use of excessive forces.
1. A stitch bonded fabric having a transverse tear line formed of cuts severing warp threads but leaving the fabric connected acrossthetear line.
2. Afabric according to claim 1, in which the tear line consists of intermittent cuts severing warp threads having at least one warp thread intact between adjacent cuts.
3. Afabricaccordingtoclaim 1 orclaim2,inwhich the tear line consists of intermittent cuts severing warp threads leaving no more than fourwarp threads intact between adjacent cuts.
4. Afabric according to any one of claims 1 to 3, having a weight of 100-250 grams per square metre.
5. Afabric according to any one of claims 1 to 4, having a gauge of from 7 to 22.
6. Afabric according to any one of claims 1 to 5, being of single bar construction.
7. Afabric according to anyone of claims 1 to 6, in which the tear line is composed of aligned cuts.
8. A roll of fabric according to anyone of claims 1 to 7 having lengthwise spacedtear lines.
9. A roll offabric accordingto claim a, having a width of 20-50 centimetres anda length between tear lines of 20-50 centimetres.
10. A stitch bonded fabric substantially as herein efore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
