Description

SPECIFICATION Adjustment means for vehicle seats This invention relates to adjustment means for vehicle seats and in particular to adjustment means having a plurality of adjustment devices which are each operable by means of a Bowden cable.
Vehicle seats having adjustment means incorporating Bowden cables are known but in such adjustment means each Bowden cable is provided with an individual adjustment device. Thus the occupant of the vehicle seat has to locate the device which the occupant wishes to select for operation of a seat adjustment and this causes distraction to the occupant during driving of the vehicle and prejudices safety in traffic. It is an object of the invention to provide adjustment means which overcomes this disadvantage.
According to the invention adjustment means for vehicle seats comprises at least two adjustment devices each operable by a Bowden cable having a sleeve and a traction cable, Bowden cable operating means including a support body for supporting the sleeves of the Bowden cables, and a handle mounted on the body for applying tensile forces to the traction cables of the Bowden cables, wherein the Bowden cables am operable independently of one another by the handle which is common to the Bowden cables, the Bowden cable operating means further comprising draw plate means associated with the traction cables, the handle being movable in at least two directions for selective operation of the draw plate means to effect operation of the adjustment. In this arrangement the adjustment means provides only one handle capable of effecting two or more adjustments of the seat independently of one another.
Preferably each traction cable is associated with a draw plate, the draw plates being movable parallel to one another on a surface of the support body in the direction of the associated traction cable, and wherein the handle is in the form of a pivoting lever, the lever being movable in the support body at a right angle to the direction of movement of the draw plates, the draw plates each having means engageable by the pivot lever to effect said movement of the selected draw plate during pivoting of the lever. In this way a translatory movement of the handle can effect operation of two or more Bowden cables.
Alternatively the draw plate means includes two longitudinal draw plates crossing over one another and each tiltable about edges by means of the handle which is in the form of a tilting lever located at the intersection of the draw plates whereby tilting of the lever applies tension to the traction cables associated with the draw plates. In this way a tilting adjustment of the handle can effect operation of two or more Bowden cables.
Moreover in this arrangement the adjustment means may be of particularly compact construction. Each of the longitudinal draw plates may have two very narrow sides along its front faces and a total of four tilting movements are possible so that four Bowden cables can be operated by the tilting lever but fewer Bowden cables can be operated, if desired.
In each case it is important that only one of the Bowden cables be actuated at any one time to effect only the chosen adjustment of the seat.
According to a further feature of the invention the support body includes a surface and said draw plates are applied to the surface, the draw plates including a first draw plate surrounding the other draw plate by means of a recess in the first draw plate, the other draw plate being freely movable in said recess, the two draw plates each having two surfaces directed towards the centre and the lever including a shaft of square cross-section, and the shaft being located as a sliding fit between said draw plate surfaces. In this arrangement the sleeves of all the Bowden cables associated with the adjustment means may be located with their ends engaging the body to maintain the sleeves in their fixed position. Each tilting movement of the tilting lever makes it possible to operate a single Bowden cable because only one draw plate is tilted about an extreme front face which is supported against the body surface and the other draw plate remains in position against said surface due to the tension in the traction cables.
According to a still further feature of the invention the support body has a base with a surface, and a first draw plate is applied to said surface, the other draw plate resting against the first draw plate, and wherein the first draw plate surrounds the other draw plate by means of a recess in the first draw plate, the first draw plate having two surfaces directed towards the centre, the other draw plate being rigidly mounted on said lever and located as a sliding fit between the first draw plate surfaces, the sleeves of the Bowden cables which are operable by the other draw plate passing through the base of the support body for movement relative thereto and said sleeves engaging the first draw plate. In this arrangement only the ends of the sleeves of the Bowden cables connected to the first draw plate are fixed to the base of the support body. The sleeves of the Bowden cables connected to said other draw plate engage the first draw plate and, therefore, follow the movements of the first draw plate. However operation of the Bowden cables connected to the other draw plate does not take place.
Conveniently the adjustment means includes spring means for biasing the tilting lever towards a neutral position in which the Bowden cables are inoperative. The tilting lever then automatically returns to its neutral position.
Guide means may be included in the support body for guiding the handle from a neutral position towards selected positions in which one or other of the Bowden cables is operative. Thus the user only has to decide at the beginning of an adjustment action on the direction of the handle and further movement then takes place under positive guidance and without difficulty.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross-section on the line I-I in Fig. 3 of one embodiment, Figure 2 is a plan view of the embodiment of Fig. 1, Figure 3 is a side elevation of the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2, Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through a second embodiment, Figure 5 is a plan view of the embodiment of Fig. 4, Figure 6 is a cross-section at a right angle to the section shown in Fig. 4, Figure 7 is a longitudinal cross-section of a third embodiment, Figure 8 is a plan view of the embodiment of Fig. 7, and Figure 9 is a cross-section at a right angle to the section shown in Fig. 7.
Referring to the drawings and firstly to Figs.
1-3, adjustment means for a vehicle seat (not shown) is illustrated. The adjustment means shown is for one-handed operation of up to four Bowden cables 10, 11, 12 and 13 but the number of cables can be increased or decreased as required.
The adjustment means includes a support body or housing 14 in which is located a draw plate 16 having a tang 1 7 for each of the Bowden cables. The draw plates 1 6 are slidably located on a surface 1 5 of the body 14 so as to be movable in directions parallel to one another and in the direction of traction cables 1 8 of the Bowden cables 10, 11, 12 and 13.
A handle or lever 1 9 is carried pivotally on the body 14 about a pivot 20, the pivot being movable along a guide rod 21 at a right angle to the directions of movement of the draw plates 16.
The position of the lever 19 in the body 14 is indicated by a pointer 22 so as to be visible and enable the operator to know which of the cables 10, 11, 1 2 or 1 3 is to be operated by the lever at the selected position of the lever.
Movement of the lever 1 9 towards an upwards direction, as seen in Fig. 1, first causes the lever to mate with one of several guide pins 23 according to the selected position of the lever 1 9. The lever is then positively guided along its further arc of movement during which a lever arm 24, fixed for movement with the lever 19, engages one of the tangs 1 7 and moves the associated draw plate 16 to operate the associated Bowden cable by drawing the traction cable 1 8 along the Bowden cable sleeve in known manner, the sleeves being secured to a wall of the body 14.
Referring now to Figs. 4-6 adjustment means is shown which, as illustrated, is caable of operating four Bowden cables 30, 31, 32 and 33. The traction cables of the Bowden cables 30, 31, 32 and 33 are attached towards the ends of two longitudinal draw plates 34 and 38, the draw plates crossing over one another.
A first draw plate 34 engages a surface of a base plate 35 of a body 36 of the adjustment means. A second draw plate 38 is surrounded by the first draw plate 34 which is formed with recess 37 in which the second draw plate 38 is received. The second draw plate 38 is freely movable in the recess 37 with some freedom of play and also engages the surface of the base plate 35.
The draw plates 34 and 38 each have slide faces, those of draw plate 34 being designated 39 and 40, and those of draw plate 38 being designated 41 and 42 (Fig. 5).
A tilting lever 44 having a square crosssection shaft 43 is received between the slide faces 39-42 as a sliding fit. The lever 44 is biased towards a neutral inoperative position, as shown in full lines in Figs. 4 and 5, by a spring 45 attached to a rod extending from the lever 44 through the base of the body 36.
Tilting of the lever 44 causes operation of any one of the four Bowden cables according to the direction of tilt. Tilting of the lever 44 in the directions shown in chain lines in Fig. 4 causes the shaft 43 to slide between the slide faces 41 and 42 and the second draw plate 38 remains substantially in position on the base plate 35 of the body 36 due to the existing tension in the traction cables of the Bowden cables 32 and 33. However during such tilting movement of the lever 44 the first draw plate 34 tilts, due to the shaft 43 being applied against the slide faces 39 and 40, about one of its front edges 46 or 47. The Bowden cable at the opposite end of the draw plate 34 about which tilting takes place is operated by drawing the traction cable along its associated sleeve and the other Bowden cables remain inoperative.
If the lever 44 is moved in the directions shown in chain dotted lines in Fig. 6 a similar tilting movement to that just described takes place except that in this case the second draw plate 38 is tilted by the shaft 43 engaging the slide faces 41 and 42. Tilting of the plate 38 occurs about one of its front edges 48 or 49 and during tilting the draw plate 34 remains in a substantially fixed position relative to the base plate 35 due to the existing tension in the traction cables of the associated Bowden cables.
The body 36 is formed with bores 50 and 51 whereby the body may be attached to a vehicle and a cover plate (not shown) may be provided formed with intersecting slots for guiding the movement of the lever 44 in one of the four directions of tilting.
In the Figs. 4-6 embodiment it will be seen that the ends of the sleeves of the Bowden cables 30-33 are held fixed in relation to the base plate of the body 36. In some applications the Bowden cables do not need to be maintained in a fixed position and the embodiment of Figs. 7-9 can be employed in this situation.
In Figs. 7-9 there is shown a similar arrangement to that of Figs. 4-6 and the first draw plate 34, the body 36 and the lever or handle 44 are of substantially the same form as previously described.
A second draw plate 52 is of different construction to that 38 of Figs. 4-6 and is a close fit in the recess 37 in the first draw plate 34. The draw plate 52 is engaged with a base 53 of the first draw plate, as shown in Fig. 9. The ends of the sleeves of the Bowden cables 32 and 33 engage against the base 53 of the first draw plate 34 so that when the first draw plate 34 is tilted the sleeves move with the draw plate 34 but without the traction cables moving relative to the sleeves to operate the cables, because during a tilting movement of the first draw plate 34 no relative movement between the first and second draw plates takes place.
The lever 44 rigidly connected to the second draw plate 52 so that the shaft of the tilting lever is not square as described with reference to the Figs. 4-6 embodiment.
