Abstract

214,332. Tait, W., and McLeod, H. B. Jan. 19, 1923. Stopping way and steering by plates at sides; submarine vessels, special apparatus for.-Steering plates at the sides of a ship comprise discs set at an angle on a transverse shaft or shafts, the plane of the discs in the neutral position being parallel to the lines of surrounding water flow. Circular discs 14, 14<a> are secured angularly to shafts 15, 15<a> which project at right angles through the ships sides near the stern where they are supported by brackets 17, 17<a>. The shafts are connected by bevel gears 19, 19<a> and actuated by a steering shaft 22. The apparatus may be placed amidships or at the bow, and a single shaft may replace the two shafts. The discs may be flanged, or be corrugated, and may be eccentrically mounted on the shaft. According to the Provisional Specification the steering plates may be applied to submarines and aircraft.
