Abstract

Inking-apparatus for a rotary plate-printing machine comprises an inking-roller, means for supplying ink thereto, adjustable actuating means for moving the inking-roller into and out of engagement with the plate cylinder, for varying periods and at any desired point of a plate, so as to ink the design portion of the plate only, and means for rendering the actuating means inoperative to retain the inking-roller in continuous engagement with the plate cylinder. A supplementary inking-roller is provided which is adapted to be moved into engagement with the plate cylinder when the main inking-roller is in continuous engagement therewith. Ink is supplied from a trough 8 by a feed-roller 9 and distributing- rollers 10, 11 to the inking-roller 12. The latter is mounted in a rocking frame 18 pivoted about the axis of the distributing-roller 11. The frame 18 or the shaft of the inking-roller 12 carries an arm 21 connected by a link 20 with an arm of a bell-crank lever 19 connected by a link 22 to an arm 23 on an oscillating lever 24, which is actuated by a cam on the shaft 7 of the plate cylinder 5. This cam, as shown in Fig. 3, is fixed in adjustable position on the shaft 7 by a screw 34, and is formed of two similar plates 36, 37 angularly adjustable on the other by means of studs 40, 41, each plate having two cam projections 38, 39. When the cam engages the roller 25 on the end of the lever 24, the inking-roller 12 is moved into engagement with the plate cylinder, the parts being returned to normal position so as to lift the inking-roller 12 away from the cylinder by spring rods 26, 30. By engaging a screw 51 carried by a pivoted nut 50 under the end of the arm 23, the inking-roller 12 may be maintained continuously in contact with the plate cylinder. The supplementary inking-roller 13 is mounted in brackets 52 adjustable by screws 56, 57 for moving it into engagement with the distributing- roller 11 and the plate cylinder. The bell-crank 19 is adjustably connected to the link 20 by screws 44 for adjusting the contact of the inking- roller 12 with the cylinder, and the roller 12 is adjustable against the roller 11 by screws 48.
