Rotary machines; cylinder machines; offset machines. - A multi-colour printing press having the printing-members in tandem is constructed so that the sheet may be moved transversely of the press between successive impressions to secure a good lateral register of the impressions. The machine is constructed to include an impression or transfer cylinder, which can be adjusted while the machine is in operation to make part of its rotation and then be shifted laterally to an adjustable extent in either direction, and to be returned to its original position when each rotation is complete. As applied to a two-colour rotary offset press, the printed sheet is transferred from the impression cylinder 10, Fig. 1, which coacts with an offset cylinder 8, to an impression cylinder 11 by means of a transfer cylinder 12 which can be moved transversely of the press after it has taken the sheet from cylinder 10. The movement of cylinder 12 is effected by a stationary cam comprising a fixed segment 16 and a pivoted segment 18, which can be adjusted by a screw and a nut operated by a worm-wheel 25 and worm 26. A fixed pin 32 in a slot 31 in the nut limits the extent of adjustment, and a pointer 34 and a scale indicates the amount of the adjustment. Rollers 21, 22 on a bracket 20 attached to the cylinder 12 embrace the cam, and transfer motion to the cylinder 12. The invention may be applied to direct rotary or cylinder presses, and the cylinder 12 may bear impression cylinder coacting at different periods with different printing-surfaces. Instead of moving the whole cylinder, the grippers only may be moved.
