Abstract

A structural panel comprising a primary skin (10) pressed into a section having alternate troughs and peaks, the peaks presenting a plane surface, with transitional portions (11) extending between peaks and troughs, and a secondary skin formed by spaced strips (15) on both faces of the panel and welded along their edges to the corresponding edges of the peaks in primary skin (10), the side edges of the panel being formed by additional strips (17) welded or otherwise attached to the edges of the boxed section. The spaced strips (15) can be replaced by a continuous sheet extending across a part of or the entire width of each face of the panel. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A structural panel This invention relates to structural panels which can be used for basic construction or for cladding.
It is known to provide a panel produced from a single skin of metal or plastics pressed or otherwise formed in a section having alternate troughs and peaks extending longitudinally of the panel to afford increased longitudinal stiffness. In such a panel the lateral stiffness is very low and to increase this, it is common to fix the panel to an existing framework or wall. Further, in many cases, it is necessary to apply to at least one face of the panel a cladding skin for acoustic or thermal insulation purposes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a modified form of panel of this general kind which has increased lateral, longitudinal and torsional stiffness and which has provision for insulation and cladding.
According to the present invention, there is provided a structural panel comprising a primary skin pressed or otherwise formed into a section having alternate troughs and peaks extending longitudinally of the panel to afford increased longitudinal stiffness, at least some of said peaks presenting a plane surface and a secondary skin formed by one or more rigid members applied to bridge across between consecutive peaks to produce a boxed section, and thus to increase the lateral, longitudinal and torsional stiffness of the panel.
Various embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of structural panel produced in accordance with the invention; and Figs. 2 to 6 illustrate in section various alternative forms of panel.
Referring now to the drawings, there is an existing product which takes the form of a single sheet 10 of steel or an alloy pressed or otherwise formed to present alternate troughs and peaks as illustrated in Fig. 1 with the peaks representing spaced plane surfaces. In this example, the troughs and peaks are of equal width, and equidistant, the transitional portions 11 from peaks to troughs being inclined such that each trough is wider at the top than at the base thus to create a continuous series of open trapezoidal channels 12 arranged alternately on opposite faces of the panel. Whilst such a panel has greater longitudinal bending stiffness than a flat sheet, its lateral bending stiffness and torsional stiffness are very low. Now, in accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the single sheet construction is converted into a box section by applying a secondary skin in the form of spaced strips 1 5 which bridge between consecutive peaks and are welded along the edges 1 6 thereof on both faces of the panel. The panel may be finished at its edges by strips 17 normal to the plane surfaces of the skin 1 0 and welded to the adjacent edges of the box section.
The application of the strips 1 5 substantially increases the longitudinal bending stiffness of the panel and produces approximately the same degree of bending stiffness in the lateral direction.
Similarly, torsional stiffness in both longitudinal and lateral directions is increased.
In Figs. 2 to 5, the primary skin x is illustrated in solid line whilst the secondary skin members y are illustrated in dotted lines. The enclosed spaces 1 8 created by application of the skin members y can be filled with a material which provides thermal and/or acoustic insulation properties.
Alternatively, the panel may be afforded further stiffness or strength by introducing a structural material such as concrete into the spaces.
The form into which the primary skin is pressed, will be selected to meet aesthetic requirements or for convenience and economy of production. It can be of a plastics material preformed by moulding, the applied secondary skin being, for example, of a thermoplastic material which can be applied by conventional plastics welding techniques.
Many applications are envisaged for a panel constructed in accordance with the invention, the dimensions of the materials themselves and of the box section produced in the completed panel, being variable to suit a particular application.
