Description
SPECIFICATION
Door hanging device
This invention relates to devices for use in hanging doors.
When it is desired to hang a door, the door must be carefully positioned in order that hinges, which have normally been already secured to an edge of a door, may be secured to the post of the door frame.
If one is working alone, it is difficult to hold the door in position with one hand while using a screwdriver to secure the hinges to the door post by means of screws with the other hand. Accordingly, it has often been the practice in the past to hold the door in position by means of wedges. However, while wedges are capable of holding the door at the correct height for hanging, they do not prevent the door from rocking from side to side so that it is still necessary to hold the door in position until each hinge has been secured by at least one screw.
The present invention aims to overcome this problem by providing a device for hanging doors which permits a user to have both hands free for securing associated hinges to a door post.
According to the invention, there is provided a device for hanging doors comprising a base, upstanding means projecting from one side of the base and adapted to engage with the bottom region of one side of a door and further means projecting from said one side of the base and adapted to engage with the bottom region of the other side of the door to co-operate with said upstanding means to hold the door in a desired position.
The upstanding means and/or said further means may be provided with movable means for moving into engagement with the associated side of a door to hold the door positively in position. The movable means may comprise a screw which may, if desired, be provided with a wing nut so that it can be turned without the use of a tool.
The upstanding means and/or said further means may further be adjustably mounted on the base plate whereby the means may be moved into engagement with the associated side(s) of a door which is to be hung. For this purpose, the or each said means may be provided with a slot and a screw projecting from the base can be passed through the slot and engaged by a nut. Loosening of the nut permits the means to be moved relatively to the base and tightening of the nut locks the means to the base.
The nut may, if desired, take the form of a wing nut to enable it to be turned without the need for a tool.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the upstanding means takes the form of a clamp plate which is fixedly mounted on the base and extends perpendicularly to the upper surface of the base from which it projects. A gusset plate may be provided which is secured to the base and to the clamp plate to stiffen the base and the clamp plate and to reinforce the connection between said base and clamp plate. A screw which is movable into engagement with the side of a door held against the fixed clamp plate is desirably provided on said clamp plate.
In this embodiment, the said further means takes the form of a clamp plate which is movably mounted on the base and also extends perpendicularly to the upper surface of the base from which it projects. A slide plate is secured to the lower edge of the movable clamp plate and is arranged to extend substantially parallel to the said upper surface of the base and to rest thereon. One or more gusset plates may serve to reinforce the connection between the clamp plate and the slide plate. The slide plate is further provided with a slot and a screw projecting from the base passes through said slot and is engageable by a nut. Means are desirably provided for preventing the movable clamp plate from rotating with respect to the base.Said rotation preventing means preferably takes the form of a projection extending from the upper surface of the base and engageable with an edge of the slide plate. The projection may take the form of a plate.
The base preferably takes the form of a substantially flat plate. Means may be provided for adjusting the plate to ensure that it is level in the event of the floor being uneven or inclined. These adjustment means may comprise screws which are engageablewith nuts fixedly mounted on the plate and which pass through bores in the plate to engage a surface therebeneath. The upper ends of the screws may be provided with wing nuts to permit them to be turned without the need for a tool. These adjustment means also permit the height of the device to be adjusted when it is being used to hang a door as will be hereinafter described.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of a device according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in
Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the device shown in
Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of clamp plate forming part of a device according to the invention;
Figure 5 is a plan view of one embodiment of a door end jack for use in conjunction with a door hanging device according to the invention;
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the jack shown in FigureS; and
Figure 7 is an end elevation of the jack shown in
Figures 5 and 6.
Reference will first be made to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, in which the device comprises a base in the form of a substantially flat, rectangular metal plate 1 to which a fixed clamp plate 2 is secured, e.g.
by welding. The clamp plate 2 extends perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the base plate 1 and perpendicular to the plane of the upper surface of said base plate 1. The connection between the base plate 1 and the clamp plate 2 is stiffened and reinforced by a substantially triangular gusset plate 3 which is secured, e.g. by welding, to one edge of each of the base plate 1 and clamp plate 2. A further gusset plate (not shown) may be provided on the opposite edges of the base plate 1 and clamp plate 2 if desired.
As can be seen from Figures 1 and 2, the gusset plate 3 extends from the fixed clamp plate 2 to one end of the base plate 1. Approximately half-way between the clamp plate 2 and the other end of the base plate 1, a screw 4 is secured to the base plate 1.
A movable clamp plate 5 can be secured to the base plate 1 by means of this screw 4. The movable clamp plate 5 is arranged to extend substantially parallel to the fixed clamp plate 2 and a slide plate 6 is secured, e.g. by welding, to the lower edge of the clamp plate 5. The slide plate 6 extends substantially perpendicular to the clamp plate 5 in a direction facing away from the fixed clamp plate 2 and substantially parallel to the base plate 1 on which it rests.
The slide plate 6 is provided with a slot 7 which is adapted to receive the screw 4 and a wing nut 8 is engageable with the screw 4 to clamp the slide plate 6 to the base plate 1. The position of the movable clamp plate 5 relative to the fixed clamp plate 2 can thus be adjusted by loosening the nut 8, moving the slide plate 6 in either desired direction along the base plate 1 and then retightening the nut 8.
The connection between the movable clamp plate 5 and the slide plate 6 is stiffened and reinforced by triangular gusset plates 9 which are secured, e.g. by welding, to the edges of the plates 5 and 6. While only one gusset plate 9 along one step of the plates 5 and 6 can be provided if desired, two are preferred in the interests of strength.
Afurther plate 11 is secured, e.g. by welding, along one edge of the base plate 1 to prevent rotation of the slide plate 6 and hence the moveable clamp plate 5 relative to the base plate. The base plate 1 is further provided adjacent each end with a pair of bores and a pair of nuts 12 are secured, e.g.
by welding, to the base plate with the axes of said nuts being aligned with the axes of the associated bores in the base plate. Screws 13 are engageable with the nuts and can pass through the bores to project below the lower surface of the base plate 1 as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The upper ends of the screws 13 are each provided with a tommy bar 14to permit the screws to be turned without the need for a tool. If desired, the tommy bars may be replaced by wing nuts permanently secured, e.g. by welding, to the screws.
Preferably, two of the devices shown in the drawings are used to hang a door. A first such device is positioned at the bottom of a door to be hung with the nut 8 loosened and the slide plate 6 moved to the position in which the closed end of the slot 7 abuts the screw 4, i.e. to the left in the drawings. The fixed clamp plate 2 is butted up against one side of the door with the base plate 1 against the bottom edge of the door and the moveable clamp plate 5 is moved into engagement with the other side of the door. The nut 8 is then tightened to clamp the device to the door. A second similar device is clamped to the door in like manner, the two devices being normally positioned adjacent the corners at the bottom of the door.
If desired, the fixed clamping plate 2 of each device may be provided with a bore and a nut (not shown) may be secured, e.g. by welding, to the clamp plate 2 with the axis of the nut being aligned with the axis of the bore. A screw (not shown) provided with a wing nut is engageable with the nut and can be screwed into engagement with the associated side of the door to reinforce the clamping action of the clamping plates 2 and 5. A plate (not shown) may be secured to the end of the screw projecting from the clamp plate 2 towards the clamp plate 5 in order to prevent the screw from damaging the door.
Once the devices have been clamped to the door which is to be hung, the door is roughly positioned in the doorway after which the screws 13 are turned to raise the door to the desired height for hanging. A spirit level can be used to check that the door is level and the four screws on the two devices can take up any differences in floor level and/or if the floor is inclined so that the door can be held perfectly level and at the correct height adjacent to the door post to which it is to be secured. The user can then secure the hinges of the door, which will normally be secured to the door prior to the fitting of the clamping devices according to the invention, to the door post by means of screws or the like, both of the user's hands being free for this purpose.The clamping devices can then simply be removed by loosening the nuts 8 to free the movable clamping plates 5 and unscrewing the screws 13 until the base plates 1 are no longer in engagement with the bottom edge of the door after which the devices can be slid along the bottom of the door and removed at the outer, free, end of the door.
A door can be hung by means of a single device according to the invention if desired but this is not preferred because the door is then somewhat unstable during hanging. Stability can, however, be improved if a larger base plate is employed with screws 13 being located at each of the four corners of the base plate.
It is also possible to use a single device as shown in Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings in conjunction with a door end jack as shown in Figures 5 to 7 of the drawings. As shown in Figures 5 to 7, the jack consists of a base plate 21 to one side of which is secured a stop plate 22 which extends perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the base plate 21 and perpendicular to the plane of the upper surface of said base plate. The connection between the base plate 21 and stop plate 22 is stiffened and reinforced by a substantially triangular gusset plate 23 which is secured, e.g. by welding, to one edge of each of the base plate 21 and stop plate 22.
At one end of the base plate 21, a spike 24 is formed by means of two cuts in the base plate and then by bending up the tang of material between the cuts. Adjacent its other end, the base plate 21 is provided with a bore and a nut 25 is secured, e.g. by welding, to the base plate 21 with the axis of the nut being aligned with the axis of the bore. A screw 26 is engageable with the nut and can pass through the bore to project below the lower surface of the base plate as shown in Figures 6 and 7. The upper end of the screw 26 is provided with a tommy bar 27 to permit the screw to be turned without the need for a tool. If desired, the tommy bar may be replaced by a wing nut.
In use, the jack is fitted to the bottom outside corner of a door which is to be hung with the stop plate 22 butted up against the outside edge of the door and spike 24 embedded into the bottom edge of the door. The base plate 21 is thus located beneath the door and its height can be adjusted by turning the screw 26 in a similar manner to the screws 13 used for adjusting the device shown in Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings.
The invention is not restricted to the abovedescribed embodiments but variations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the fixed clamp plate 2 and gusset plate 3 may be formed integrally if desired instead of being made of two separate plates. Similarly, the movable clamp plate 5 and slide plate 6 may also be formed integrally instead of being made of two separate plates. The stop plate 11 on the base plate 1 may also be omitted if desired.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, the slide plate 6 is replaced by a pair of slide plate 16 which are spaced apart to define a slot 17 between them. This embodiment is otherwise similar to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings and like parts are denoted by like reference numerals.
The device according to the invention need not be made of metal plate with welded joints but other materials and methods of connection may be used if desired. For example, the device may be constructed from wood or synthetic plastics materials.
