Abstract
The device consists of a bracket 50 on which is rotatably mounted about a vertical axis on a base 20 which can be clamped in any desired position being monitored by graduations around the rim of the base and a vernier scale on the bracket. The top face of the base 20 is inclined to the horizontal and on this base is rotatably mounted about axis B-B a workholder support 10 which can be clamped in any desired position being monitored by graduations around the rim of the support and a vernier scale on the base. The top face of the workholder support has a circular location about which various types of workholding devices may be located or clamped. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A workpiece orientating device for machine tools
I, Kenneth Grassam of Sunderland, Tyne and
Wear, England, a British subject, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statements.
This invention relates to a workpiece orientating device for machine tools, where the workpiece has to be presented at a given relation to the machine tool spindle.
Devices are known where workholders are tilted about a pivot horizontal to the machine tool table and parallel to the workholding surface and are limited generally to one type of workholding ability such as a flat surface to which workpieces are secured or a tilting machine vice. Such devices have disadvantages that their construction requires extra measuring on setting euipment, and that the small clamping effect available at the pivot renders them liable to movement and vibration during use.
The invention as claimed is intended to remedy these drawbacks. It solves the problem of setting the desired angle of presentation of the workholder without resort to loose setting pieces, and provides for the use of a plurality of workholding devices, and provides a rigid supported structure during use.
One way of carrying out the invention is described in detail below with reference to drawings which illustrate only one specific embodiment.
A workpiece orientating device comprising essentially a workholder support member having an upper surface and circular location whereby means can be engaged therewith for rotating and securing a workholding device in any radial position on the said surface rotating about an axis perpendicular to said surface, and a base for mounting on a machine tool, the workholder support member being pivotably mounted on the base for rotatable movement about an axis angular disposed to the workholder mounting surface, the said axis being perpendicular to the inclined mounting surface of the base so that the workholder support member rotates on the base, this movement causing an angular disposition of the workholder mounting surface and the surface on which the device is mounted. The base being rotatably mounted on a bracket so that the angle formed with the workholder support face may be presented at any desired angular relation to the axis of a machine tool.
Figure 1 is an elevation of an example of the device in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a section through the device on the line 2-2 in figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a plan view of the device.
The workpiece orientating device shown includes a workholder support member 10 incorporating a mounting face 15 and circular
location 25 about axis AA the mounting face 1 5 forming the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle
with axis BB and the mounting face 35. The axis of
rotation BB of member 10 is perpendicular to face
35 on base 20 on which member 10 is rotatably
mounted and clamp bolts 45 are provided to secure member 10 in any desired position rotated
about axis BB and face 35 on base 20. Circular T section grooves 55 being formed for this purpose.
The mounting face 15 is, in the example shown, constructed to allow workholding devices to be secured in any position rotated about axis AA circular T grooves 65 being formed for this purpose but a datum bush 30 is included which allows workholding devices to be located in any desired position, but it will be understood that the construction of face 15 and location 25 can vary from this example to suit other applications of workholding devices but will be maintained concentric to axis AA. In order that the amount of rotation of member 10 be monitored the rim 75 is provided with equal spaced graduations and a vernier scale 40 is secured to base 20 for fine setting purposes. The base 20 is rotatably mounted on a bracket 50 by means of clamp bolts 85 and circular T section grooves are provided in bracket 50 for this purpose. The movement of rotation of base 20 is monitored by equal spaced graduations around the rim 95 and a vernier scale 100 is secured to bracket 50 for fine setting purposes. It will be understood that the bracket 50 need not have parallel surfaces and that face 105 may be inclined to the horizontal.
1. A workpiece orientating device comprising essentially a workholder support member having an upper surface and circular location whereby means can be engaged therewith for rotating and securing a workholding device in any radial position on the said surface rotating about an axis perpendicular to said surface, and a base for mounting on a machine tool, the workholder support member being pivotably mounted on the base for rotatable movement about an axis angularly disposed to the workholder mounting surface, the said axis being perpendicular to the inclined mounting surface of the base so that the workholder support member rotates on the base.
this movement causing an angular disposition of the workholder mounting surface and the surface on which the device is mounted. The base being rotatably mounted on a bracket so that the angle formed with the workholder support face may be presented at any desired angular relation to the axis of a machine tool.
2. A workpiece orientating device as claimed in
Claim 1 which includes a device for measuring the amount of rotation of workholder support member.
3. A workpiece orientating device as claimed in
Claim 2 which includes a locating device for locking workholders in any desired position on workholder support member.
4. A workpiece orientating device as claimed in
