Abstract

The member 5 is made of metal such as mild steel and spans the whole width of a building. The member comprises a first plate or part 6 which is in use horizontal, a rigid beam member 7 which depends from the rear (as considered in use) edge of the first plate or part 6 and a second plate or part 8 which projects from the lower edge of the rigid beam member 7 in the opposite direction to the first plate or part 6. The first plate or part 6 acts as a fire break, the rigid beam member7 acts as a jigging piece for jigging joists in position and the second plate or part 8 acts as a lintel over openings and also as a firestop across the whole span of a building in which the member 5 is installed. The member 5 can be installed across the whole width of a terrace of houses at floor level (Fig. 2) or at roof level (Fig. 4). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Elongate structural member The invention relates two an elongate structural member such as a jigging piece, lintel and firestop.
Timberframe construction of buildings such as houses is becoming more and more an accepted mode of construction, and soon will be in the region of 45%-50% ofthetotal of domestic dwellings in the U.K.
The problem of such housing using wooden frames is thatthey present a fire hazard.
It is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantageofthe prior art.
According to the invention there is provided, for timber frame housing, an elongate memberfor substantially horizontally spanning a building to provide a combined jigging piece lintel andfirestop, comprising a first plate or part, a rigid beam member projecting from orfrom near one edge ofthefirst plate or part, and a second plate or part projecting from the rigid beam memberin a direction opposite the direction in which the first plate or part projects.
Using the invention it is possible to provide a combined jigging piece, lintel and fire stop at floor or roof level in a timberframe construction building.
Elongate members embodying the invention are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figs. 1 and 2 are respective side elevational and perspective views of one embodiment in position in a timberframe construction building at floor level; and Figs. 3 and 4 are respective side elevational and perspective views of a second embodiment in position in a timberframe construction building, at roof level.
In the drawing, like parts are indicated by like reference numerals.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, part of a timberframe construction of building is shown, having an outer brick or the like wall skin 1 and a timber innerframe 2 seperatedfromtheouterwallskin by a cavity3.
In order to support floorjoists 4there is an elongate member 5 made of metal such as mild steel which spans the whole width of the building and comprises a first plate or part 6which is horizontal and which spans the cavity 3 a rigid beam member7 which depends from the rear (as considered in use) edge of the first plate or part 6 and a second plate or part8which projects in the opposite direction to the first plate or part6fromthe lower edge (asviewed in the Figs.) of the rigid beam member 7. Both plates and parts 6 and 8 terminate in respective downwardly directed lips 9 and 10.
The rigid beam member 7 and the second plate or part 8 each have fixing means in the form of rows of elongate holes 11, 12. The holes 11 in the rigid beam member7 allow nails 13to be inserted into joists 4, the elongate nature of the holes 12 allowing foradjust- ment during installation. Likewise the holes 12 in the second plate or part 8 allow the member to be secured to elongate wooden laths 14 of the timber frame 2.
Again, the elongate nature of the holes 12 allows for adjustment during installation. The lip 9 butts against the inner face ofthe brick wall skin 1 and so obviates twisting or canting of the elongate member 5 in use, and provides a spacer. The first plate our part 6 also acts as a fire-stop preventing or hindering passage of fire vertically in the cavity 3, the rigid beam 7 member acts as a jigging piecefor jigging the joists 4 in position and the second plate or part 8 acts as a lintel over openings and also as a firestop across the whole span of the building. The elongate member 5 is shown in use in conjunction with a lintel 1 Bfor supporting the brick wallsskin 1 overanopening 16such asforawindow.
Referring nowto Figs. 3 and 4, the elongate member 20 shown therein is for installation at roof level. In this embodiment, the first plate or part 21 has elongate holes 22 for securing to wooden laths 23 oftheframe 2, and the second plate or part 22 is inclined before terminating in a lip 24 which is substantially parallel with the rigid beam member 25.
In this embodiment, the second plate or part 22 acts as a fire stop to prevent or hinder passage offireto or from the roof space, the rigid beam member 25 as a jigging piece for part 26 of the timber frame to which it and the first plate or part is secured as by nails 27 through respective holes 22 and 28 the firstplate or part 21 also acting as a lintel to support rafters 29 over openings in the wall.
In both embodiments, the elongate member, 520 spans the whole width ofthe building, being supported on the outer boundary walls thereof.
Each perimeterwall may include such an elongate member, or only the front and back walls may have them.
Further the elongate members can be utilised in a terrace, each unit oftheterrace having its own elongate member or members, which thus extend end to end over the length of the terrace and are mounted on the party walls.
