Abstract

A hydraulic lifting seat 22 for lifting invalids in and out of a bath 24, is provided with a hydraulic ram 10 preferably powered by mains water pressure. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Lifting apparatus The invention relates to lifting apparatus and particularly though not exclusively, apparatus for lifting invalids.
The invention provides lifting apparatus for use by persons wishing to enter or leave a bath, the apparatus comprising a seat, means for moving the seat between a lower position wherein the seat locates in the bath on or close to the bottom thereof and an upper position wherein the seat locates at a level above a side of the bath, and means for moving the seat over the side of the bath.
Preferably the means operable to move the seat from the lower position to the upper position comprises a fluid operated piston and cylinder device. Desirably this device is operable by mains water pressure from an ordinary domestic water supply.
The piston and cylinder device is preferably arranged to operate in a vertical direction, the seat being connected to an arm which itself is connected to the piston rod of the piston cylinder device. The arm together with the seat is pivotable relative to the piston rod or alternatively the piston rod itself is pivotable together with the arm and the seat.
Preferably the piston and cylinder device is double-acting and water under mains pressure is fed to one or other sides of the piston under the control of a simple flow diverter valve. The exhaust side of the piston is preferably connected by the valve to a drain.
The piston and cylinder device is preferably fixed to a metal plate with its longitudinal axis normal to the plane of the plate, the plate being fixed, in use, to a floor of the room where the apparatus is to be used. The plate may replace parts of one of more floor boards.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic view showing a bath in cross section and apparatus according to the invention in an upper operating position.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the apparatus in a lower operating position.
The apparatus comprises a double acting piston and cylinder device 10 supplied with water from a domestic mains water supply through an inlet pipe 12 via a diverter valve 14. The valve 14 also provides for the removal of water from the exhaust side of the cylinder through a waste outlet pipe 16. The piston rod has, at its upper end, a swivel mounting 18 with an arm 20 rotatably mounted thereon. A seat 22 is attached to and extends downwardly from the arm 20, the seat being of a width narrow enough to allow its base to rest on the bottom of a bath shown schematically as 24.
In use, a disabled person would transfer himself from, for example a wheelchair, onto the seat 22 and, using his arms, would rotate the seat until it is over the bath 24. He would then operate the valve 14 to allow exhaust water to be released from the lower side of the piston and allow mains water pressure to be applied at the upper side of the piston. The seat is thus lowered into the position shown in Figure 2 whereupon the person may proceed to bathe. When the disabled person wishes to get out of the bath the reverse procedure is followed, i.e. the valve 14 is operated to introduce water at domestic mains pressure to a space in the hydraulic cylinder below the piston and also to vent water from above the pistn to waste, the seat then rising up to a position where it can be swung clear of the bath as shown in Figure 1.The piston and cylinder device is attached at its base to a metal plate 26 which is set into the floor of the bathroom in which the apparatus is used after the removal of some floor boards. The apparatus may be made from any suitable materials for example metals, plastics and wood, taking into account the corrosive effect of water on same metals.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention. For example the cylinder-may be single acting, the weight of the seat plus an occupant being used to lower the piston within the cylinder under gravity, water pressure being used only to raise the seat. In circumstances where the apparatus is to be used by persons who are not able to rotate the seat about the piston rod, then a motor, preferably powered by water pressure under the operation of a simple valve, could be provided to rotate the seat. The shape of the seat can be altered to suit the bath concerned, and the person for whom the apparatus is designed. The operating mechanism of the valve can be varied to suit the user.
Additional apparatus could be provided so that operation of the valve and rotation of the seat can be carried out by remote control using for example radio signals actuated by eye movement or breath pulses of the user.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features herein before referred to whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
1. Lifting apparatus for use by persons wishing to enter or leave a bath, the apparatus comprising a seat, means for moving the seat between a lower position wherein the seat locates in the bath in or close to the bottom thereof and an upper position wherein the seat locates at a level above a side of the bath, and means for moving the seat over the side of the bath.
2. Lifting apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which means operable to move the seat from the lower position to the upper position comprises a fluid operated piston and cylinder device.
3. Lifting apparatus as claimed in claim 2 in which means are provided for connecting the piston and cylinder device to a domestic mains water supply the said device being operable bythe mains water pressure.
