Surface condensers; condenser systems.-In a surface condenser, especially one of the " radial flow " type is provided with a chamber 12 in which the air and other non-condensible gases are cooled before passing to the air pump, the chamber 12 is arranged circumferentially about the outside of a portion of the condenser shell. Any condensate from the chamber 12 passes to the hot-well 24 through a water seal, so that there is no direct communication between the chamber 12 and the condensate-outlet. The chamber 12 is cooled by water flowing through pipes 23 and communicates with the body of the condenser through a passage 29 which extends the length of the body of the condenser and opens into the upper part thereof. The openings through which the air passes to the chamber 12 are interrupted in the neighbourhood of the hot well 24 and the openings 16 through which the condensate passes. Circular walls 35, 36 form a water-seal in the hot well and separate the openings 16 from the chamber 12, which communicates with the outer side of the waer-seal through openings 22. Fig. 1, shows the invention as applied to a condenser in which all the condensing-tubes are somewhat spaced from the walls of the shell, but a form is also described in which the lower tubes are arranged close to the wall.
