Description

SPECIFICATION Joint for interconnecting modular building panels This invention relates to joints for interconnecting modular building panels.
It is known that a great problem when assembling prefabricated external building panels is constituted by the fact that thermal insulation is needed in order to prevent the creation of zones of condensation along the walls formed by such panels.
The present invention aims to provide a joint for interconnecting modular building panels which avoids the creation of such zones of condensation and which, at the same time, protects the edges of the panels and supports said panels.
According to the invention, there is provided a joint for interconnecting modular building panels comprising a pair of first profiles each having, in cross-section, a U-shaped channel adapted to receive an edge region of a respective outer sheet member of a first building panel and a straight portion connected to the end of one limb of said U-shaped channel, extending substantially parallel thereto beyond the web of said channel and terminating, at its end remote from the U-shaped channel, in a substantially C-shaped channel having its opening facing towards the said straight portion; a pair of second profiles each having, in cross-section, a U-shaped channel facing in the opposite direction to that of the U-shaped channels of the first profiles and adapted to receive an edge region of a respective outer sheet member of a second building panel, one limb of said U-shaped channel extending beyond the end of the outer limb of said channel and terminating in a further substantially C-shaped channel having its opening facing in the direction towards the length of said limb; a first connecting member engageable at each end in the substantially Cshaped channels of the first profiles and a second connecting member engageable at each end in the substantially C-shaped channels of the second profiles; the straight portions of said first profiles extending substantially parallel to the said one limbs of the second profiles.
Preferably, the said straight portions of the first profiles are arranged to be located between the said one limbs of the second profiles when the profiles are fitted to the edges of panels and the panels are connected together.
The connecting members desirably define a cavity between them for the reception of electric cables and the like. This cavity is preferably displaced from the plane in which the edges of the panels meet each other. Washers or strips of insulating material are preferably located between the first and second profiles in the regions of the substantially C-shaped channels.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the substantially C-shaped channels of the first profiles are located within the lengths of the associated straight portions and the substantially C-shaped channels of the second profiles are located beyond the ends of the said one limbs of the U-shaped channels of said second profiles.
The edge regions of the outer sheet members of the panels are desirably provided with recesses in the outer surfaces of said sheet members with which the U-shaped channels of the profiles are engageable. The recesses have a depth substantially corresponding to the thickness of the material of the profiles whereby when the profiles are fitted to the panels the outer sides of the Ushaped channels are substantially flush with the outer surfaces of the panels.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawing, the single figure of which is a vertical crosssection through one embodiment of a joint according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the joint comprises a pair of first profiles of the male type each of which consists of a U-shaped channel 1 having one limb extending beyond the other limb. A respective straight portion 2 is connected to said one limb of each of the U-shaped channels at the end thereof and the straight portions 2 extend beyond the webs of the associated channels. Each straight portion 2 terminates in a substantially C-shaped channel 3 with its opening facing towards the end of the straight portion 2. The channels 1 are adapted to receive edge regions of a pair of outer sheet members 4 of a first panel, the outer surfaces of the sheet members being provided with recesses 5 at said edge regions in which the outer, shorter limbs of the U-shaped channels of the first profiles are engageable. The provision of the recesses 5 enabies flush surfaces to be obtained on the outer surfaces of the panel after the profiles have been fitted as shown in the drawing.
The two first profiles are interconnected by their substantially C-shaped channels 3 by means of a first connecting member 6. The member 6 is arcuate and has at each end a channel 7 in the form of a P with its eyelet open which is engageable with a respective one of the channels 3. The first profiles and the connecting member 6 are embedded in filling material 8 which fills the cavity between the outer sheet members 4 of the first panel.
The joint further comprises a pair of second profiles of the female type each of which consists of a U-shaped channel having one limb 12 longer than the other limb 1 The longer limb 12 of each channel terminates in a respective substantially Cshaped channel 13 located beyond the end of the associated limb 1 2 and having its opening facing towards the side of the limb 12 on which the shorter limb 11 of the U-shaped channel is located. In like manner to the channels of the first profiles, the channels of the second profiles are adapted to receive edge regions of a pair of outer sheet members 14 of a second panel, the outer surfaces of said sheet members likewise being provided with recesses 1 5 at said edge regions in which the outer, shorter limbs 11 of the U-shaped channels of the second profiles are engageable.
The recesses 1 5 enable flush surfaces to be obtained on the outer surfaces of the second panel after the profiles have been fitted as shown in the drawing.
The two second profiles are interconnected by their substantially C-shaped channels 13 by means of a second connecting member 1 6 which is arcuate and which has, at each end, a channel 17 in the form of a P with its eyelet open which is engageable with a respective one of the channels 13. The connecting member 16 is embedded in filling material 18 which fills the cavity between the outer sheet members 14 of the second panel.
In order to connect the two panels together, the profiles are first fitted to the edges of the panels as shown in the drawing and then the first profiles with the connecting member 6 are inserted into the cavity defined between the longer limbs 12 of the second profiles. Washers or strips 9 of insulating material are provided between the substantially C-shaped channels 3 and 1 3 of the profiles to provide a cushion and seal between the profiles.
When the first and second profiles are fitted together, a cavity 10 is formed between the arcuate sections of the connecting members 6 and 1 6 which serves for the reception of electric cables, telephone wires and the like. As will be seen from the drawing, the cavity 10 is displaced from the plane at which the edge regions of the outer sheet members of the panels meet each other.
The profiles are preferably made of metal such as steel although other materials may be used if desired. The connecting members 6 and 16 are preferably made of a synthetic plastics material although, again, other materials may be used if desired. The filling materials 8 and 18 will normally consist of thermally insulating material.
It will be seen that the joint according to the invention is capable of ensuring, when assembled, a perfect seal between adjacent building panels providing a secure insertion and, at the same time, avoiding the formation of thermal zones owing to the use of insulating material for the connecting members. Strength is imparted to the joint by the use of steel profiles.
The design of the profiles eliminates the possibility of breakage of the outer sheet members and/or filling material of the panels in the regions of the joint.
