Description

SPECIFICATION Road gulleys This invention relates to road gulleys, more particularly to a trap for use in a road gully, enabling foul air to be readily and economically trapped and facilitating easy cleaning of the drain leading from the gulley.
According to the present invention a trap for use in a road gulley comprises a tubular spigot adapted to be sealingly positioned in a drain at one side of the gulley, a trap portion extending substantially at right angles to the spigot, and a handle situated at the outside of the bend formed between the spigot and the trap portion. The handle enables the trap to be fitted in the road gulley with the trap portion extending downwardly or enables the trap to be removed for cleaning of the drain and/or the trap.
The spigot is preferably provided with an annular sealing ring comprising a substantially cylindrical portion located in an annular groove in the spigot and provided with at least one but preferably two spaced, annular webs ensuring sealing in various diameters of drain.
The spigot may be provided with longitudinal locating ribs between the sealing ring and the trap portion.
The trap portion preferably creates a water seal 100 m/m deep.
The outside of the bend is preferably provided with a flat surface over which the handle extends.
The trap is preferably made of plastics material e.g., polypropolene, and the sealing ring is preferably made of a synthetic rubber.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trap in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is an elevation in the direction of arrow A in Figure 1; Figure 3 is an elevation in the direction of arrow B in Figure 1; Figure 4 is an elevation in the direction of arrow C in Figure 1; Figure 5 is a section showing the trap in position in a gulley; and Figure 6 is a part sectional elevation along the line VI--VI in Figure 5.
In Figures 1-4 a trap 1 comprises a spigot 2, a trap portion 3, a handle 4 extending over a flat surface 5 on the outside of the bend 6 between the spigot and the trap portion 3, an annular groove 7 in the spigot 2 housing a sealing ring 8 which comprises a cylindrical portion 9 and annular webs 10. Locating ribs 11 are provided spaced equidistant around the spigot 2 between the sealing ring 8 and the trap portion 3.
Figures 5 and 6 show a road gulley 12 comprising side walls 13, a brick course 14 and grating 1 5 having a removable lid 1 6 for access to the gulley 12, a drain 1 7 in one of the side walls, the drain comprising a pipe portion 18 in which the spigot 2 of the trap 1 is held by the webs 1 O of the sealing ring 8, the pipe portion 18 being engaged by a socketed drain pipe 19.
The trap portion 3 extends downwardly into the gulley 1 7 below the level 20 of water 21 and creating a seal. The handle enables the trap 1 to be fitted in the road gulley 1 2 with the trap portion 3 extending downwardly and/or enables the trap 1 to be removed for cleaning of the drain 1 7 and/or the trap.
1. A trap for use in a road gulley comprising a tubular spigot adapted to be sealingly positioned in a drain at one side of the gulley, a trap portion extending substantially at right angles to the spigot, and a handle situated at the outside of the bend formed between the spigot and the trap portion.
2. A trap as in Claim 1 wherein the spigot is provided with an annular sealing ring comprising a substantially cylindrical portion located in an annular groove in the spigot and provided with at least one but preferably two spaced, annular webs.
3, A trap as in any of Claims 1 to 2, wherein the spigot is provided with longitudinal locating ribs between the sealing ring and the trap portion.
4. A trap as in any of Claims 1 to 3 wherein, the outside of the bend is provided with a flat surface over which the handle extends integrally.
5. A trap substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings.
